Purpose of Position
Supervises and coordinates functions and the day to day activities of specimen processing and the diagnostic center. Provides support services to meet the needs of clients, performed in accordance with accepted CLIA standards and practices.

Description
1. Organizes, directs and supervises functions and day to day activities of the Specimen Processing and Diagnostic Tech areas
2. Prepares work schedules, assigns personnel, evaluates work performance and makes recommendation for personnel actions.
3. Trains/orients staff in all areas of pre and post-analytical processes, procedures and related computer functions.
4. Trains and orients diagnostic tech staff in phlebotomy, EKG, holters and stress test procedures.
5. Maintains competency in all areas of responsibility.
6. Provides for professional growth and development of staff, encouraging continuing education through workshops, online learning, and formal education
7. Develops positive relationships and maintains efficient workflows with reference laboratory personnel.
8. Promotes open communication within and outside of the Laboratory. Serves as a resource to other departments of the healthcare system utilizing laboratory services.
9. Conducts monthly sectional meetings and submits minutes to the Laboratory Manager.
10. Reviews Reference Lab reports with appropriate follow-up and documentation and maintains as required.
11. Requests and orders supplies as necessary to keep materials on hand at all times.
12. Responsible for the development, implementation and management of quality assurance and process improvement projects, as well the evaluation of data and recommendations.
13. Maintains assigned Procedure Manuals in compliance with CAP and NCCLS standards and review/revises the manuals as necessary and at least annually.
14. Participates in budget preparation and strives to operate section within allocated budget.
a. Makes recommendations for modification or changes for the maximum efficiency and cost effectiveness.
b. Keeps current with equipment and supplies by vendor contracts to evaluate new products and equipment.
c. Submits monthly variance reports on time.
15. Interviews applicants and make recommendations for hiring
16. Maintains confidentiality of information deemed confidential.
17. Develops and maintains effective communication with assigned staff, co-workers, physicians, other Hospital personnel, outside organizations or others who provide or receive Laboratory services.
18. Maintains professional growth and development through approved seminars workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
19. Maintains a thorough knowledge of departmental and Hospital policies and procedures as they pertain to the job, including the fire and disaster plans.
20. Maintains a thorough knowledge of the union contract.
21. Performs other work related duties and activities as assigned or requested.

Qualifications
· Three years of recent (within the last 5 years) Phlebotomy or Specimen Processing experience required.
· Minimum of Associates Degree in science, (A.S.) or equivalent relative work experience specifically in a clinical laboratory. Bachelor of Science preferred.
· Three years of experience working in a clinical laboratory required.
· ASCP or NCA Certification in phlebotomy, EKG or laboratory science preferred.
· Demonstrated leadership experience.
· Prior supervisory experience in a clinical laboratory preferred.
