Job Summary

The Support Specialist for Academic Support Services assists the Coordinator of Academic Support Services of University College in the development and delivery of specific University College/Visor Center services including: tutorial services, Supplemental Instruction, day to day operations, supervision, hiring, and training of student employees and graduate assistants, outreach efforts to students served by the Visor Center, data collections for assessing various programs, and various Center details such as scheduling of tutoring and workshops and development of trainings for student employees and graduate assistants.

The Support Specialist for Academic Support Services position must work without considerable supervision to achieve the effective administration and development of the goals of University College within Academic Support Services. These goals are determined by the Coordinator of Academic Support Services and the Associate Director of Academic Enhancement in coordination with other University College units. Regular meetings and regular contact with the Coordinator of Academic Support Services in University College are expected and should contribute to the achievement of the goals of University College Academic Support Services and the goals of University College.

Salary Rate / Pay Rate

$20.00 - $24.00 per hour

Required Qualifications

1. Bachelor's degree (transcript required - may be unofficial)
2. Six (6) months of full-time (or part-time equivalent) work experience in higher education (1 year in a graduate assistantship would equal six (6) months) performing academic support service duties. Academic support service duties include direct assistance or contribution in the programmatic delivery of tutoring, educational services, academic advising, academic achievement, personal growth, or career planning for college students.
3. Demonstrated ability to multi-task and produce quality work under deadlines.
4. Exemplary intercultural fluency through excellent communication skills including verbal, non-verbal, listening, problem solving, public presentations, and teamwork.
5. Working knowledge of basic office software (Microsoft Office Suite).

Preferred Qualifications

1. Experience with college level tutoring and/or college level academic support services
2. Master's Degree (preferred in Education, College Student Personnel, Psychology or related field).
3. Supervisory and/or leadership experience
4. Familiarity with Illinois State University and University College policies and procedures and state and federal law, in particular the Ethics Standards for all employees of the State of Illinois State University.
5. Ability to demonstrate flexibility in a changing administrative model.
6. Ability and experience working with diverse populations of students, peers, and public.
7. Ability to work independently and without intense supervision, but also effectively contribute to a team with a learner-centered and service-oriented philosophy.
8. Excellent oral and written communication skills, including ability to effectively make public presentations.
9. Excellent interpersonal skills including listening, communication, and teamwork.

Work Hours

Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. with occasional events outside of those hours and days.

Functional Expectations

Must be able to complete the following with or without a reasonable accommodation:
1. Effectively communicate on a daily basis.
2. Remain at a workstation for extended periods.
3. Move about in various locations across campus as needed to complete day-to-day work.

The Civil Service examination for this classification is based on your application materials and responses to the supplemental questions. No participation other than submission of applicant materials is required from applicants that qualify to take the exam. If you meet the minimum required qualifications for this position, you will receive a score calculated based on your education and experience, and your name will be placed on the active employment register by exam score. After the application deadline, the names within the top three scores will be referred to the department for interview. The active register for this classification will be voided when the position is filled.
