Job Description

Under direct supervision by a Registered Profress Nurse, surgeon, or other healthcare professional, serves as part of a medical team providing surgical care to patients; facilitates the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures. There are two (2) Assignemnt Levels within this class of positions; all personnel perform related work.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of good aseptic techniques through surgical scrub procedures, handling of instruments, other sterile supplies and gowning.
  • Maintains sterile conditions on surgical field.
  • Recognizes break in surgical techniques.
  • Ensures cleanliness of the Operating Room, the presence of supplies and the functioning of all equipment.
  • Compares case cart contents with scheduled procedure.
  • Accepts sutures from circulating nurse and prepares them for sequential use.
  • Assists in draping the patient.
  • Anticipates surgeon's needs for specific instruments, sponges, or other equipment required for operative procedures, as directed, using aseptic techniques.
  • Responds appropriately to a change in patient's condition and proceeds upon surgeon's request.
  • Explains, involves and instructs patient/families concerning the therapeutic regimen and environment of care.
  • Effectively utilizes the electronic as well as the paper medical record.


Minimum Qualifications

For Appointment to Level I
1. Documented designation of Grandfathered status as a Surgical Technologist; or
2. Completion of an appropriate training program for Surgical Technologists in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard or Public Health Service Commissioned Corps; or
3. Service in the federal government to the extent that the individual performed duties related to the practice of Surgical Technology.

For Appointment to Level II
1. Hold and maintain a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting.

Note: Effective January 1, 2015, all newly hired incumbents to the title of Surgical Technologist must hold and maintain a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential and be assigned at Level II. In addition, any employee who functions as a Surgical Technologist will be required to annually complete fifteen (15) hours of continuing education in order to remain qualified to perform the functions of a Surgical Technologist at an HHC facility.
