JOB DESCRIPTION Grossmont Union High School District SWIMMING POOL MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN Purpose Statement: The job of Swimming Pool Maintenance Technician is done for the purpose/s of maintaining an attractive, sanitary and safe swimming pool for students, staff and public; controlling swimming pool chemicals; maintaining required logs; ensuring availability of equipment and/or supplies; and complying with health and safety requirements. This job reports to Executive Director, School Construction & Building Services Essential Functions

• Cleans assigned school facilities (e.g. swimming pool, pool deck, equipment areas, filter systems, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary and safe condition.

• Evaluates equipment function for the purpose of maintaining facilities and/or complying with mandated health requirements.

• Inspects swimming pool, deck, mechanical equipment, etc. (e.g. diving board, machinery, fixtures, emergency equipment, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that it is suitable for safe operations, maintained in an attractive and clean condition, and/or identifying necessary repairs.

• Installs repairs and rebuilds swimming pool related equipment (e.g. diving boards, chlorinating equipment, industrial size pumps and motors, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring swimming pool facilities are in proper working order.

• Maintains pool, including proper chemical and PH rate (e.g. adjusts water analyzer, adding chemicals, etc.) for the purpose of complying with mandated safety and health requirements for pool water purity and balance.

• Maintains records (e.g. logs, etc.) for the purpose of providing an up-to-date reference trail and/or ensuring compliance with mandated requirements.

• Performs preventive maintenance tasks (e.g. repairing fiberglass, plastic and concrete; resurfacing, repairing and installing diving boards; replacing loose or damaged tile; etc.) for the purpose of making adjustments and routine repairs to District swimming pools, auxiliary equipment and related items.

• Prepares purchase orders for supplies, equipment and parts for the purpose of ensuring the availability of items as needed.

• Responds to inquiries from students, staff, public, County Health Department, etc. for the purpose of conveying information regarding swimming pool operations, etc.

• Sets up and/or moves equipment (e.g. starting blocks, benches, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring availability for special events, etc.

• Stocks chemicals, supplies and equipment (e.g. lane lines, starting blocks, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining adequate quantities and security of items.

• Troubleshoots and maintains pool boilers and heaters for the purpose of ensuring proper working order. Other Functions

• Assists other personnel for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective work environment. Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications SKILLS are required to perform single, technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; handling hazardous materials; and preparing and maintaining accurate records. KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: strong knowledge of plumbing, pipe fitting and electrical work; health standards and hazards; safety practices and procedures; pumps, motors, filters, chlorinators, heaters, and other equipment and machinery necessary to operate and to repair large public swimming pools; swimming pool maintenance; and first aid. ABILITY is required to schedule activities; gather and/or collate data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with specific, job-related data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. In working with others, problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; displaying mechanical aptitude; meeting deadlines and schedules; and working with frequent interruptions. Responsibility Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized routines; providing information and/or advising others; and operating within a defined budget. Working Environment The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; frequent climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 5% sitting, 80% walking, and 15% standing. The job is performed under with some temperature extremes and some hazardous conditions. Experience Job related experience is required. Education High School diploma or equivalent.
