Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Employer: University of Pittsburgh
Industry: English
Salary: Competitive
Job type: Full-Time

The University of Pittsburgh Department of English invites applications for the position of Teaching Assistant or Teaching Associate Professor. The successful candidate will have proven experience in teaching a range of literary and cultural texts that express perspectives from across the diversity of LGBTQ+ communities and experiences and will demonstrate innovative pedagogical practices, especially those that actively engage students in the intellectual and creative work of scholar-citizens. They will teach existing courses in LGBTQ+ literature and culture, contribute to our growing beyond-the-classroom curriculum, and develop new courses that link LGBTQ+ literature and culture to other specialized areas of study, such as children's culture, disability studies, or other intersecting fields. They will be asked to also design LGBTQ+-focused versions of existing course offerings with the aim of further integrating LGBTQ+ literature and culture into our general education curriculum; demonstration of experience teaching across multiple genres, periods, or readerships is also desired. Some courses the faculty member may be asked to teach include Sexuality and Representation, Queer and Transgender Literature, and LGBTQ+-oriented versions of such courses as Imagining Social Justice and Representing Adolescence.

The Teaching Assistant or Teaching Associate Professorship is a renewable full-time position in the Appointment Stream (non-tenure track), carrying a teaching load of 3-3 per academic year and with expected service such as administrative or committee work and advising undergraduate research. There are opportunities for promotion and leadership. Salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience, and benefits are generous. The position will begin in the Fall term of 2025, and candidates must have a PhD in English or a related field.

As a department that values inclusive and welcoming environments in which to work and learn, we are interested in hearing from candidates whose lived experiences would prove resourceful in mentoring students of diverse backgrounds, including students of color, LGBTQ+ students, first-generation college students, and students with disabilities. The Literature program-one of four constituent programs in the Department of English, along with Writing, Composition, and Film-contributes to a diverse array of other majors, programs, and certificates across campus and seeks to build those alliances further.
