Tech Infra Program Manager III, Non-Standard Infrastructure Capacity Planning \u0026 Delivery

Arlington, Virginia

Employer: Amazon
Industry: Project/Program/Product Management--Technical
Salary: $133800 per year
Job type: Full-Time

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we're the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain - and we're looking for talented people who want to help.

You'll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You'll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. And you'll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.

If you enjoy being at the forefront of new, non-traditional data center deployment activities; operating in a highly ambiguous environment; driving long-range business growth in support of an evolving business strategy; and working across teams to solve challenges and remove obstacles, then this is the role for you.

The AWS Non-Standard Infrastructure Global Delivery Team has an immediate opening for a Sr. Technical Infrastructure Program Manager to drive non-standard infrastructure capacity delivery around the world. You will lead cross-functional teams to drive the development and implementation of non-standard infrastructure designs and develop and document requirements, budgets, and project schedules to drive timely infrastructure delivery; drive improvements to the health of the fleet; and make data-driven decisions that influence large capital investments. Your role will span long-range planning for complex, multi-year capacity delivery and capital improvement initiatives; working with local teams to plan, initiate, and execute specific projects and drive coordination of local efforts to implement global fleet optimization activities. You will work across the entire AWS organization and partner with key stakeholders and partner teams to find solutions for both short- and long-range demand plans, address short- and long-term capacity constraints, and drive projects from conceptual feasibility through development of detailed technical requirements, budget approval, completed design, implementation, functional testing, and deployment. Finally, you will drive accountability across the Infrastructure organization and develop mechanisms to monitor the health of the capacity delivery and sustainment program, escalating issues to executive leadership as needed.

This role offers an opportunity to drive and influence business-critical decisions impacting the long-term future of AWS, working at the leading edge of emerging capability and service offerings. The Candidate must be comfortable managing remote project teams delivering novel and sometimes pioneering solutions across multiple countries and time-zones; assessing, identifying, and mitigating downstream risk; troubleshooting unforeseen and time-critical implementation issues as they arise; removing bureaucratic barriers to project success; and dealing with persistent uncertainty, pitfalls, and change. Being able to build and manage cross-functional matrixed teams, establish trust with a variety of internal customers and stakeholders, eliminate non-value-add activity, design solutions, remove blockers, and find creative ways to accelerate project delivery is essential. Most importantly, the Candidate must be able to act independently, using good judgement to drive timely decision making and deliver high-quality results.

Up to 15% domestic and international travel may be necessary to support AWS non-standard infrastructure planning and scaling efforts.

If you demonstrate these qualities, are a "get stuff done" kind of person, and enjoy the challenges of delivering technical and highly innovative projects, this position is for you!

A day in the life

Its typically different day-to-day, but generally you will engage with local project teams to plan, execute, and monitor build projects; work with finance and procurement teams to fund and purchase equipment and materials; look downstream to identify risks to schedule and cost; work with partner teams to identify opportunities to deliver capacity better, faster, cheaper without diminishing quality or increasing schedule risk; and working with customer teams to plan more effectively for the future.

About the team

The Non-Standard Infrastructure Global Delivery Team is responsible for end-to-end program management of infrastructure capacity planning, delivery, and scaling in support of various non-standard services, such as Glacier, Astra/Ground Station, Burrow, Quantum Computing, etc. The team also takes on TIPM roles in support of leadership priorities when there is significant impact to the business and the scope of work falls outside of a traditional region team's responsibilities.

While we are primarily responsible to our customers for the planning and delivery of infrastructure capacity, we have a unique role among build teams to also help our Service team customers mature their business model, demand forecasts, and growth strategies over time. This requires routine and direct engagement with our customer service teams and an additional level of transparency (and leadership visibility) in our processes and deliverables. Being non-standard, much of this work is manually executed, requiring an increased attention to detail and an additional level of effort to cue and drive our partner teams to trigger activities that our regional colleagues might expect to be driven through established automated processes. Our goal is to integrate our non-standard work into these established mechanisms and work streams in well considered ways over time.

Our customers do not have in-depth knowledge of our processes and planning requirements - and they generally want it to move faster and cheaper with a higher degree of confidence. Our charge is to build robust and agile on-time capacity delivery programs to anticipate and meet their needs at the lowest cost possible. Additionally, our regional infra partners often do not have a sufficient understanding of the peculiarities of our Service customers or an awareness of their needs and requirements. We are not readily supported by the traditional mechanisms that drive planning activity and, therefore, must deliberately develop and execute manual processes and mechanisms to close the gap.

We are open to hiring candidates to work out of one of the following locations:

• \tBA/BS degree (Preferably in Engineering, Physics, Economics, Business, or Mathematics, however other degrees are not a disqualifier), or 10+ years of commensurate Program/Project management experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• \tA Masters of Science or Arts (BS/BA/MPhil) degree
