Four years of full-time experience* in a trade under a skilled tradesperson which provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in skilled trades at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.

When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid driver's license the allows the candidate to legally operate a vehicle in New York State appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.

Duties Description Under the direction of the Trades Supervisor Carpenter, the incumbent performs journey-level tasks and projects involving Carpentry. Work assignments will require the incumbent to travel in park vehicles to other facilities within the Palisades Region Historic Sites.

The job duties of this position include, but are not limited to:

• Complete journey-level work in a primary trade in one of the following: carpentry, masonry and plaster, or painting on buildings and structures, preferably historic buildings.
• Perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance, repair, installation, and construction tasks in the building trades.
• Exhibit a working knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in their respective trade.
• Plan and lay out work following blueprints, specifications, instructions, including ordering materials and equipment.
• Perform carpentry, masonry, and/or painting repairs, including roofing and structural repairs, finish work, window and door restoration, masonry restoration, and/or skilled painting and plaster restoration to preserve or restore the original nature of historic buildings and structures.
• Read building plans; diagnose problems; supply rough sketches to scale for work to be performed; make detailed estimates for costs, including time and materials for various projects; and have a working knowledge of modern safety and practices and code compliance.
• Use hand tools, portable power tools, shop equipment and measuring and testing instruments appropriate to the assigned trade.
• Coordinate and execute projects, work independently with a minimum of direct supervision.
• Assign, supervise, review, train and evaluate work of lower-level employees.
• Assist in snow and ice control and operate snow removal equipment during the winter months.
• Assist in other areas of park operations as directed.

Additional Comments OPERATING NEEDS:

• Must have the ability to perform medium to heavy physical labor and be able to work from scaffolding or ladders.
• Must have the ability to communicate effectively with other staff.
• Must have the ability to comprehend written material.
• Must have the ability to supervise others.
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license that allows the candidate to legally operate a vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
• Must be able to pass a physical for respirator use.
• Must be willing to travel in park vehicles to various sites to complete work either independently or with a team.
• A working knowledge of historic preservation and restoration building crafts is preferred

The posted salary range will receive an additional location pay, with a Downstate Adjustment of $1,650.
