Jacob's is seeking a high energy, team player to join us as a Traffic Safety Engineering Intern in our Chicago, IL office. This opportunity is your chance to work on interesting and complex transportation engineering projects that include traffic operational analysis, safety studies and analysis, traffic impact analyses, corridor studies, and traffic/roadway design. While most of the work will focus on local programs, there will be the opportunity to work on exciting transportation safety, planning, and design projects across the country.

Our top candidate will have excellent communication skills, a strong proficiency in Microsoft Office (including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint), a basic understanding of GIS and CAD systems, and is interested in applying highway safety research to transportation planning and design projects. Experience with computer programming is a plus.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • Work with design and analysis teams in support of local and national traffic safety and operations projects
  • Prepare, analyze, and evaluate data (safety data, crash reports, demographic information) from sources such as various Departments of Transportation, local clients, and manual data collection.
  • Visually present the data in tables, charts, graphs, diagrams, and maps using programs such as SQL, MS Excel, MS Word, ArcGIS, PowerBI, etc. and create platforms to present the data internally and to clients.
  • Participate in client and stakeholder meetings as a representative of Jacobs. This will also include internal and external presentation of various analyses and project results.


  • Enrollment in an ABET accredited engineering program
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office (including Excel, Word and PowerPoint)
  • Basic understanding of GIS and CADD systems.
  • Experience in computer programming is a plus
  • General knowledge of engineering principles and materials
  • Critical thinking skills necessary with the ability to plan and conceptualize
