Position Description

Performs entry-level work activities related to the installation, repair, troubleshooting and maintenance of traffic systems, communication, illumination and/or data collection devices/systems. Work may be performed in heavy traffic and may require extensive statewide travel. Work may require contact with governmental and private entities. Employees at this level perform assignments following specific instructions and are subject to frequent review by the immediate supervisor.

Essential Duties:

Essential Duties for Traffic Systems I and II include:

  • Assists in inspecting construction methods, workmanship and maintenance procedures to ensure contractors build, install and maintain traffic-related systems/equipment in accordance with plans and specifications and contract requirements.
  • Assists in installing, maintaining, modifying, adjusting, testing, troubleshooting, inspecting and/or repair of electronic traffic control, communication, traffic data collection, and/or illumination systems.
  • Assists in maintaining stock and equipment to ensure necessary tools, products and materials are available for scheduled projects.
  • Assists in measuring intersections and evaluating traffic patterns and timing sequences; computes mathematical factors for adjusting timing of traffic signals and/or systems.
  • Assists in operating, maintaining and servicing equipment such as bucket trucks, drilling and pole setting rigs, concrete saws, trenching machines, cable locating instruments, insulation testers and/or 18-wheel calibration truck.
  • Assists in responding to complaints and identifying problems regarding traffic signal timing/traffic congestion and assists in developing recommendations for long-term solutions.
  • Follows applicable safety procedures when working in an area where other utilities such as high voltage lines, gas lines, water and sewage lines and heavy traffic are located.
  • Learns to install, maintain and replace TV cameras, motorized LED and fiber optic signs and cable and communication modems; monitors communication devices/systems.
  • Moves/assists in the placement of barricades, cones and other traffic control devices.
  • Responds to emergency situations to assist with repair and maintenance of traffic signals, systems, lighting or traffic data collection equipment.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.


Additional duties for Traffic Systems Technician II include:

  • Identifies, troubleshoots and problem solves possible new site characteristics.
  • Inspects construction methods, workmanship and maintenance procedures to ensure contractors build, install, maintain and repair traffic control/data collection related equipment or facilities in accordance with plans, specifications and contract requirements.
  • Installs, maintains and replaces TV cameras, motorized LED and fiber optic signs and cables; monitors communication devices/systems; as required moves related equipment/items.
  • Installs, maintains, modifies, adjusts, tests, troubleshoots, inspects and/or repairs electronic traffic control, communication, traffic data collection and/or illumination systems.
  • Installs, troubleshoots and maintains hardware and software related to traffic systems, Intelligent Transportation Systems or the Statewide Traffic Analysis and Reporting System.
  • Maintains stock and equipment to ensure necessary tools, equipment, products and materials are available for scheduled projects.
  • Operates, maintains and services equipment such as bucket trucks, drilling and pole setting rigs, concrete saws, trenching machines, cable locating instruments, insulation testers and/or 18-wheel calibration truck.
  • Assists in the fabrication of traffic control and/or data collection devices that are not available from the industry.


Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience:

Traffic Systems Tech I Experience :None

Traffic Systems Tech II Experience : 1 year construction, electronic troubleshooting, electrical construction/installation, electromechanical, traffic management, transportation engineering, design, traffic systems maintenance. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Licenses and Certifications:

  • The following Licenses and/or Certifications are required for this job:
  • Safety Impact Certificate
  • Commercial Driver Certificate
    • Must obtain Class A CDL within 180 days of hire with N endorsement.

  • This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.


All employees classified in a position at TxDOT that requires employee to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) are required to sign a Commercial Driver's License Program Agreement which outlines employee responsibilities and service time commitment

  • Traffic engineering terminology and fundamentals
  • Electrical construction procedures
  • Troubleshooting, repairing and calibrating electronic and mechanical components and subsystems
  • Using, maintaining, and repairing of tools and equipment of the trade
  • Interpreting applicable information
  • Using computers and applicable programs, applications, and systems
  • Safely using, operating, and maintaining applicable equipment
  • Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment and mechanical devices of the trade


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
  • Climbing - ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
  • Lifting-raising objects from lower to higher position/horizontally to a different position
  • Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
  • Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment
