Transporation Specialist I (B19): $45, 244 - $72,408/yearly

Transporation Specialist II (B20): $48,158 - $77,477/yearly

Transporation Specialist III (B21): $51,278 - $82,901/yearly

Position Description

Provides technical expertise and coordination for transportation programs involving design, building construction projects, construction of transportation systems, traffic operations, maintenance of highways and facilities, or bridge inspection and appraisal in accordance with Department standards. Assists with project planning and the development of policies and procedures for area of responsibility. Work requires contact with governmental officials, consultants, contractors and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

Transportation Specialist I

  • Assists with project design involving design calculations and sketches of plans, layouts and typical sections.
  • Coordinates compilation of complete plan packages for submissions to the responsible engineer or architect for review and signature.
  • Coordinates design work among TxDOT entities, consultants and contractors.
  • Coordinates permit operations.
  • Develops site layouts utilizing engineering workstations and software.
  • Ensures compliance with specificat1ons for devices; safety laws, rules and regulations; and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
  • Evaluates and analyzes design issues.
  • Monitors the design and execution of state-funded rehabilitation and preventive maintenance projects.
  • Performs data collection, evaluations, analyses, studies, inspections, forecasts assessments and plan development.
  • Researches and evaluates data, interprets and analyzes results, prepares reports and recommends solutions to problems.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.


Transportation Specialist II

In addition to the above:

  • Responds to public concerns regarding construction and provides or recommends correct, cost-effective solutions to issues raised during the administration of a construction project.
  • Serves as a liaison with city, county and other governmental and private entities concerning traffic issues and works to establish viable solutions.
  • Serves as technical member on transportation-related projects.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.


Transportation Specialist III

In addition to the above:

  • Assists in overseeing design work among TxDOT entities, consultants and contractors
  • Assists in overseeing project design-involving design calculations and sketches of plans. layouts and typical sections.
  • Evaluates and analyzes complex design issues.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

Education for Transportation Specialist I/II/III: Bachelor's Degree in a related discipline. Relevant experience may be substituted for education on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Experience:

Transportation Specialists I: 2 years* transportation design, construction, traffic operations, maintenance, bridge inspection experience.

Transportation Specialists II: 4 years* transportation design, construction, traffic operations, maintenance, bridge inspection experience.

Transportation Specialists III: 5 years* transportation design, construction, traffic operations, maintenance, bridge inspection experience.

*Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent.

Licenses and Certifications for Transporation Specialist I/II/III:

    • Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
    • Safety Impact Certificate, which will be issued by employer at time of hire

Transportation Specialists III

In addition to the above:

  • Design, testing and quality control of materials used in the construction and maintenance of highways and related structures
  • Preventive maintenance methods and procedures
  • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
  • Applying engineering principles. practices, and methods in job responsibilities
  • Reading and interpreting applicable plans, schematics, blueprints and maps


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Light work. Lift up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs
  • Fingering- picking, pinching, typing: working primarily with fingers rather than whole hand
  • Grasping- applying pressure to an object with fingers and palm
