Annual Salary Range:

Transportation Specialist I (B19)- $45,244 - $72,408

Transportation Specialist II (B20)- $48,158- $77,477

This position is for (1) Transportation Specialist I or II. The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the sole right in determining the level of position based on the applicant's work experience, education, skill level, and all other appropriate factors, and based on business needs.

Position Description

Provides technical expertise and coordination for transportation programs involving multiple design and/or building construction projects, construction of transportation systems, traffic operations, maintenance of highways and facilities, or bridge inspection and appraisal in accordance with Department standards. Assists with project planning and the development of policies and procedures for area of responsibility. Work requires contact with governmental officials, consultants, contractors and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

Transportation Specialist I and II:

  • Inspects current projects for proper use of personnel, equipment and materials, traffic control and quality of work completed.
  • Inspects roadways and evaluates road conditions.
  • Performs field reviews of construction projects to assist area engineers and project engineers in resolution of construction problems.
  • Researches and evaluates data, interprets and analyzes results, prepares reports and recommends solutions to problems.
  • Serves as program coordinator responsible for coordination of engineering/architectural projects from initiation to completion.
  • Serves as technical member on transportation-related projects.
  • Travels to districts and maintenance offices to perform site visits and monitor maintenance programs.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

All Levels:

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in a related discipline.
  • Relevant experience may be substituted for education on a year per year basis . Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
  • Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent.


Work Experience:

  • Transportation Specialist I: 2 years transportation design, construction, traffic operations, maintenance, bridge inspection experience.
  • Transportation Specialist II: 4 years transportation design, construction, traffic operations, maintenance, bridge inspection experience.


Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Competencies:

  • Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance
  • Roadway maintenance concepts, methods and procedures
  • Maintenance contract inspection procedures
  • Program/project planning, development, and management methodologies
  • Public relations for maintaining effective working relationships with individuals and groups, both internal and external
  • Using computers and applicable programs, applications, and systems
  • Exercises logic and reasoning to define problems, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; makes decisions that support business objectives and goals


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools
  • Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
  • Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment
  • Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
  • Hearing-perceive sound at normal speaking levels; Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers receive information by oral communication
