Job Title - Starter/Alternator Specialist

Supervisor(s): Shop Supervisor for Transportation, Assistant Director of Operations for Transportation, Executive Director of Operations

Job Goals:
  • To provide excellent vehicle maintenance services for all Jefferson County School System buses and other vehicles.
  • To assist transportation personnel in the diagnosis, prevention, and correction of transportation problems or unsafe conditions.
  • To assist with the effective management of school system vehicles, fiscal and material resources, and transportation personnel.

Minimum Qualifications:
  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Minimum of five (5) years of fleet mechanic's experience.
  3. Maintain a current Department of Transportation (DOT) physical, or Alabama School Bus physical, as required by Board policy.
  4. Possess and maintain a valid Alabama bus driver license (BDL) with P/S endorsement and commercial driver's license (CDL) Class A.
  5. Possess and maintain Alabama School Bus Mechanic certification.
  6. Ability to meet suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.
  7. Competent written and verbal communication skills.
  8. Ability to furnish personal set of appropriate mechanic's tools.
  9. Ability to operate and maintain needed tools and diagnostic equipment.
  10. Ability to diagnose mechanical problems, to implement preventive maintenance programs, and to follow safety and recommended rules for efficient shop operations.
  11. Physical strength and agility to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  12. Ability to exert up to 75 pounds of force.
  13. Ability, agility and stamina to engage in prolonged sitting or standing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, bending, turning and reaching.
  14. Ability and willingness to work indoors and outdoors year-round in noisy, crowded environments, and inclement weather.
  15. Ability and willingness to work after hours, weekends, or holidays when necessary.
  16. Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.
  17. Such alternative qualifications as listed as the Board may require.

Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
  1. Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, goals and priorities.
  2. Performs maintenance and repair on all vehicles and equipment owned by the Jefferson County Board of Education.
  3. Operates wrecker, steam cleaning equipment, welding equipment, or other needed equipment as directed.
  4. Installs special equipment such as power packs and warning systems.
  5. Performs repairs and maintenance on buses as needed.
  6. Maintains, repairs, reconditions and replaces alternators and starters of all types on school system buses, trucks, and/or other vehicles.
  7. Maintains service bay in a clean, neat and safe manner. Keeps service truck washed as needed and serviced at intervals as needed as established by the transportation department.
  8. Maintains an accurate inventory of supplies and equipment assigned to service truck.
  9. Properly uses and maintains responsibility for tools, equipment, and material resources of the school system.
  10. Requests supplies and equipment needed to carry out duties and assigned projects.
  11. Drives buses and transports students as needed.
  12. Performs road tests of system vehicles as directed.
  13. Performs road call duty as needed.
  14. Responds promptly to call out in emergency situations.
  15. Performs all vehicle maintenance services with priority on student and employee safety; removes from service any bus or other vehicle that is unsafe to operate.
  16. Returns buses or other vehicles to active service only after identified maintenance problems have been corrected.
  17. Engages in work related training to increase knowledge and skills as directed and/or for advancement.
  18. Performs duties in a courteous, professional manner.
  19. Maintains appropriate confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters.
  20. Demonstrates initiative in identifying potential problems and/or opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility.
  21. Reports potential problems, unusual events, or work irregularities to appropriate administrative or supervisory personnel.
  22. Responds to inquiries, requests, and constructive feedback in a timely and positive manner.
  23. Maintains and submits reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner.
  24. Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local laws.
  25. Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures.
  26. Performs other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor(s).

Evaluation: Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the Board's policy on evaluation of personnel .
