Job Summary:

MedStar Health is looking for a full-time Unit Secretary to join our team at MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital in our Med-Surg 2E u nit . This position is full-time and will be (3) 12-hour shifts from 7:00AM - 7:00PM with rotating weekend .

As a Unit Secretary, you will provide administrative and clerical support on a patient-centered care unit or department. Facilitates communication and contributes to patient care. Greets the physician and other health care personnel on arrival at the unit and assists in expediting the processes of patient care. Acts as a receptionist for visitors and other health care personnel and serves as a central contact for telephone calls and distribution point for paperwork, laboratory, and test results.

Primary Duties :

  • Performs general secretarial and clerical responsibilities. Enters and coordinates computer data on all patients in the unit. Coordinate with other hospital departments to request and obtain supplies and services.


  • Work with nursing staff to coordinate patient transfers to and from the unit, or other facilities. Serve as the unit's communication person, answering phone calls, taking, and relaying messages.


  • Answer questions of visitors, physicians, or other departments in person or by phone. Greeting and assisting visitors and family members. Provide routine information regarding hospital and unit procedures.


  • Initiate, maintain , and update patient charts, inserting appropriate forms , department reports, consults, etc. Complete appropriate requisitions and/or charge slips and obtain proper approvals.


  • Access patient data for nursing and medical staff as needed. Maintains work area on nursing unit in a neat and orderly condition.


Qualifications :

  • High School Diploma or GED .


  • Completion of Crisis Prevention Intervention training within 6 months of hire .
