Job Description Summary
This R01 randomized clinical trial will test the effectiveness of two body fat reduction interventions, FIT Families, a multicomponent family-based behavioral intervention, against a credible attention control condition, Home-Based Family Support. Study participants will participate in weekly, home-based intervention sessions for six months delivered by Community Health Workers. The sessions will provide nutrition and physical activity education and support. The study will include 180 obese African American adolescents ages 12 to 17 and their overweight caregivers identified through pediatric practices. Families must live within 50 miles of MUSC to be eligible.

The person in this position will be a research assistant and will be responsible for helping to screen and recruit eligible adolescents and their caregivers into the 18-month study and will also obtain consent for research participation. The candidate will conduct in-home or office research assessments with adolescents and caregivers which involves facilitating participant survey completion and iPad-based tasks as well as collecting body measurements (mid-arm, mid-thigh, waist, height, weight, percent body fat). The position also involves collecting blood samples via finger stick and measuring blood pressure at the research visits. The in-person assessments will take place at times convenient for families so may take place after normal working hours and/or some weekends. Other tasks include data entry, data export, literature reviews, and attending weekly staff meetings.

Job Duties:
  • 35% -Track the recruitment, screening, and enrollment of research participants. Coordinate, schedule and conduct consent appointments online or in families’ homes or other community-based locations convenient to family while maintaining adherence to regulatory procedures. Track recruitment and generate basic recruitment reports for research team.
  • 30% - Coordinate research participant data collection appointments. Conduct data collection appointments in families’ homes or other community-based lo- cations convenient to family. Schedule study visits in conjunction with protocol times lines.
  • 15% - Complete research related tasks including data entry. Assist with the creation of simple data collection forms (case report forms). Prepare, ship, and maintain inventory of finger prick blood sample specimens and supplies.
  • 10% - Engage in professional development activities and ongoing training and supervision.
  • 5% - Trouble shoot technology (e.g. Fitbit synching), to facilitate data collection.
  • 5% - Other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements: A high school diploma and four years of relevant program experience. A bachelor's degree may be substituted for the required program experience.
