Georgia-Pacific is seeking a Utilities Process Manager to join our Alabama River Cellulose team in Perdue Hill, AL who will advance our team's capabilities. This role will work closely with the maintenance, electrical & instrumentation, process control, and operations departments to improve the utilities area, apply safety protocol to improve productivity, reduce costs through process/equipment optimizations and operator knowledge and skill improvements throughout the facility while striving for 1000% compliance in safety and environmental compliance. This position will report to the Power & Recovery Area Manager and play a key role on the team of 60+ employees.

Since 1978, the Alabama River Cellulose (ARC) mill has been a major part of the economic lifeblood of the region. Recognized as one of the largest pulp operations in North America, the mill is also considered the largest manufacturer in Monroe County and one of the largest employers in the area with nearly 500 employees.

What You Will Do

  • Analyze and evaluate a utilities area manufacturing process which may include, chemical recovery boilers, biomass or gas fired boilers, black liquor evaporators, ionic-exchange water demineralization equipment, chemical recovery reactors, industrial air compressors with air drying equipment, and steam turbine power generation with distribution equipment, to identify areas for improvement, cost reduction, and increased efficiency.
  • Design, implement, and optimize manufacturing systems, workflows, and procedures to enhance productivity and reduce waste.
  • Work closely with production teams to troubleshoot issues, propose solutions, and streamline operations while implementing measures to drive sustainable improvements.
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure consistency and compliance with safety, quality, and environmental regulations.
  • Collaborate with engineering, maintenance, and process control teams to identify and implement equipment upgrades or modifications to improve reliability and performance.
  • Lead or support process improvement initiatives or other continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Provide technical expertise and guidance for new systems and capital improvement projects.
  • Facilitate, coach, and teach operational optimization concepts, work processes, methods, & tools
  • Effectively apply the challenge process; coach initiative owners to urgently escalate issues that are prohibiting the delivery of initiative results
  • Collaborate with suppliers to evaluate new technologies, materials, and equipment for potential implementation.
  • Facilitate ownership-based work system strategies by building capability of technicians or operate, maintain, and improve their assets.
  • Stay updated on industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies related to manufacturing processes and equipment.


Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)

  • Experience with a utilities area manufacturing process or equivalent area including, chemical recovery boilers, biomass or gas fired boilers, black liquor evaporators, ionic-exchange water demineralization equipment, chemical recovery reactors, industrial air compressors with air drying equipment, and steam turbine power generation with distribution equipment
  • Experience in a turn-around facility, supporting not only an operational but cultural turn-around.
  • Experience with automation and advanced technology, including remotely managed assets
  • Experience identifying and setting effective KPI's; proven record of helping drive gaps to closure and leading change throughout a manufacturing, military, or industrial environment.
  • Experience utilizing constraint analysis and continuous improvement to prioritize work and solve complex issues.
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of assigned tasks, with minimal oversight and guidance.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams and Outlook


What Will Put You Ahead

  • 5+ years of experience in pulp, paper and utilities operations (ex: natural gas boilers, turbines, feedwater systems, recovery boilers, evaporators)
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical, industrial, manufacturing or related field
  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes
  • Strong knowledge of computer systems (SAP, PI, Parkview etc.)
