Job Description:

Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads - both students and employers - for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 28,000 students in 2019-20. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions. The college had 3,203 graduates in 2019-2020, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 36% enrolled at TCC. TCC's institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

This position will aid military-related students in obtaining and utilizing the varying education benefits available from the federal and state government. Process enrollment certifications in accordance with applicable policies and procedures. Provide support to promote student success. Supervise and manage the day-to-day operations of the CMVE Office including overseeing the Assistant Office Manager and the Department of Veterans Affairs work study students.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of the various education benefits available through the Department of Veterans Affairs.
  • Knowledge of the benefits available through the Department of Defense and the various branches of service to include reserve components.
  • Knowledge of state benefits available to students (VMSDEP and domicile exceptions) and processing of these benefits.
  • Ability to complete the mandatory training necessary to become and remain a School Certifying Official (initially and annually).
  • Ability to interpret and apply federal, state, and college policies and procedures as they relate to students using GI Bill ®, Active duty and reserve tuition assistance, and Military Spouse Career Advancement Accounts (MyCAA) benefits.
  • Ability to learn and apply knowledge of curriculum and program requirements as they relate to processing certifications.
  • Ability to develop proficiency in certifying students for their education benefits using Enrollment Manager.
  • Ability to provide exceptional customer service to students, internal stakeholders, and the public.
  • Ability to present information regarding the GI Bill ® to individuals or groups of students.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all stakeholders (students, parents, faculty, administrators, other college departments, supervisors, and direct reports) via telephone, email, and in person.
  • Ability to provide excellent student services in all modalities in a high-volume environment that includes a CMVE call center support service.
  • Ability to work effectively and in collaboration with other School Certifying Officials within the department to meet deadlines and goals.
  • Ability to hire, supervise and train full time, wage and work study employees.
  • Demonstrated skills in computer applications to include Word, Spreadsheets, student databases, and email.
  • Ability to learn and be proficient in DVA certifying software, document imaging systems, and various applications used at the college. Ability to learn new technology as it emerges and updates.
  • Ability to work accurately with details, construct records, make data entries, track curriculum and safeguard records for each student.
  • Ability to learn and process the various domicile exceptions available to military related students.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems using strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Knowledge of and belief in the mission of a comprehensive community college, particularly as it relates to student support services.
  • Ability to learn the college and outside resources that are available to assist students with academic and personal challenges.
  • Ability to interpret and apply the family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working with military affiliated students and processing of benefits, preferably in a community college
  • Prior military experience
