The Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) currently has an opening for a part-time (60%) Veterans Claims Officer 1 position to serve as a team member in the Claims Assistance Office in Milwaukee. This position is headquartered at the Milwaukee Regional Office on West National Avenue near the Zablocki Medical Center.

Position Summary

This position represents veterans and their dependents in presenting claims before the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The incumbent provides advocacy, counseling, referral, and follow-up services to veterans and dependents needing assistance; makes sound decisions on behalf of veterans and dependents as their Power of Attorney representative; and applies acquired skills and knowledge in obtaining claims awards and relief to state taxpayers.

Salary Information

The starting salary is between $25.73 - $28.50 an hour ($32,111 and $35,568 annually) .

This position is part-time (60%) and will work approximately 24 hours per week.

Current state employees' pay will be based on the provisions in the State of Wisconsin Compensation Plan. This classification is in Pay Schedule 12, Pay Range 64.

A twelve-month probationary period will be required.

Job Details

Due to the nature of this position, WDVA will conduct criminal background checks prior to an offer of hire. Candidates for employment in this position must also pass a federal background check.

The incumbent of this position must be accredited by WDVA and the USDVA to provide representation to veterans in the prosecution of their claims within their first year of employment.

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States (i.e., a citizen or national of the U.S., a lawful permanent resident, an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship) at the time of application. The WDVA does not sponsor work or student visas, either at time of hire or at any later time.

Qualifications

Minimally qualified candidates will have experience with case management (e.g., record keeping, representing clients, recording case notes, interviewing clients, etc.).

Well qualified candidates will also have experience working through an appeal (e.g., filing an appeal, explaining appeal rights to clients, acting as a representative throughout the process, etc.).
