Job Summary/Basic Functions
Virginia State University's next Vice Provost for Academic Affairs will be a student-centered team leader with experience in the areas of innovation for academic programming, educator development, and implementation of evidence-based student success strategies. The Vice Provost for Academic Affairs will work with departments, deans, chairs, and faculty to foster an inclusive culture that exemplifies the principles of shared governance, collaboration, and academic innovation.
Reporting directly to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs will plan, lead, and implement a number of key academic initiatives. The Vice Provost for Academic Affairs will liaise with faculty, administrators, external stakeholders, and other constituents. The Vice Provost for Academic Affairs is expected to exercise a high level of independent judgment, discretion, sensitivity, and decorum in carrying out the duties of the office in an efficient, timely, and professional manner.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Vice Provost will be expected to:
• Assist the Provost in the successful oversight of the daily operations of the Division of Academic Affairs
• Provide leadership and direction in implementing the Academic Affairs' strategic initiatives, ensuring alignment with the university's mission and goals.
• Ensure the annual assessment of the university's strategic plan and Academic Affairs operational plan.
• Work closely with the Provost and budget team to develop and manage the Academic Affairs budget, prioritizing budget needs based on available revenue and resources to ensure fiscal
responsibility and sustainability.
• Oversee the development and implementation of academic policies and procedures and monitor policies and procedures to ensure clarity and compliance for direct report areas.
• Assist in determining and developing new and innovative education opportunities and other relevant program initiatives.
• Collaborate with academic deans and other university offices to provide oversight to academic program planning and initiatives, including new academic programs, curricular reviews, curricular
integrity, synergy, and efficiencies; academic program productivity analytics, and the collaborative management of online program offerings
• Monitor program success and viability with respect to enrollment, retention, graduation rates, completion rates, and student success.
• Provide leadership and support for faculty development, including mentoring, professional development opportunities, and promotion in rank processes.
• Establish a plan to support the recruitment and retention of highly qualified faculty.
• Foster a student-centered philosophy throughout the division and cultivates a culture of innovation to ensure programs and pedagogy effectively meet the evolving needs of VSU students.
• Support the assurance of academic program quality, teaching, research, and service excellence.
• Assist with coordinating the master schedule, course offerings, and available faculty pool.
• Participate in the revision or development of programs and courses in conjunction with the VPAA, deans and department chairs, program directors, Office of Planning and Institutional
Effectiveness, and the faculty based on university needs and outcomes of the assessment processes
• Build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including faculty, staff, students, alumni, donors, and community partners.
• Contribute to the creation of external partnerships with local industry and educational entities.
Minimum Qualifications
REQUIRED FOR ENTRY INTO POSITION:
• Candidates must hold an earned terminal degree from an accredited institution.
• Minimum of 5 years professional experience in an institution of higher education
• Minimum of 3 years professional experience in an academic leadership position/role in a higher education setting
• Demonstrated record of scholarship in pedagogy, including experience in curriculum development, assessment, and best instructional practices
• Demonstrated record of teaching excellence at multiple levels and the ability to support all faculty and instructional staff.
• Budget administration experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Proven leadership experience and substantial administrative responsibilities in academic innovation and student success in higher education.
• Experience managing a wide range of academic programs and student success initiatives.
• Understanding land-grant universities like VSU, including their complexities, culture, structure, and processes, with a proven ability to work effectively across different units.
• Experience collaborating with multiple stakeholders and unit leaders to achieve goals.
• Prior success in securing external grant support related to academic innovation and collaboration.
• Demonstrated creative leadership in addressing emergent issues in higher education, with a preference for experience at Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs) and Historically Black Colleges and Universities
(HBCUs).
• Experience with faculty and staff professional development
• Experience in managing higher education academic personnel processes
• Effective written and verbal communication skills
• Demonstrated capacity to lead in a collaborative environment while maintaining confidentiality
• A commitment to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives
