Job Summary
Academic advisors provide specialized academic advising services to students and advising-based perspectives to University colleagues and public stakeholders, such as students, family-members and prospective students. By integrating excellent interpersonal and communication skills with intermediate knowledge of curricula, policies (departmental, School, and University), resources, and student development, the Advisor helps students identify options, set academic and developmental goals, and make progress toward those goals.

The advisor assists in the development of advising programs and initiatives that facilitate student engagement, success, and retention, provides advising data, and collaborates with academic and other University operational units on matters that impact student recruitment, success, and retention.

Minimum Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree and two (2) years related experience; or Master's degree.

Preferred Education and Experience
• Strong computer skills in electronic file management, word processing, database management, and spreadsheets and experience with student information systems.

• Professional student-focused experience in a higher education setting (e.g. academic advising, career advising, student affairs, etc.).

• Experience in and/or knowledge pertaining to university operations, policies, and procedures in areas such as registration, class scheduling, degree and graduation requirements

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Cooperates and demonstrates the ability to work effectively and collaborates with administrators, faculty and staff in various campus offices.

• Provides academic advising needs of individuals or groups of students.

• Advises students about the development of education plan options, university policies and resources available.

• Responsible for understanding and interpreting the requirements and academic options in a specific area and in other campus departments to facilitate the student's points of interest.

• Participate in student success activities for the School and University, including but not limited to new student orientation, new student programs, events hosted by department, etc.

• Advise new, transfer, and current students with the Harry W. Bass Jr. School of Arts, Humanities, and Technology.

• Analyzes student records in preparation for appointments.

• Responds to student emails in a timely manner.

• Manage and maintain records and databases.

• Attend training sessions or professional development workshops.

• Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, virtually and in-person.

• Ability to work independently and as a team.

• Ability to take initiative.

• Manage time and establish priorities.

• Foster a welcoming and supportive environment for students.

• Foster a cooperative work environment.

• Some weekend and evening hours are required.

• Other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions
• Ability to sit or stand at will for extended periods throughout the workday
• Ability to perform frequent to constant repetitive keyboarding functions to complete work tasks
• Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds occasionally

• After the probationary period, this role may be eligible for a hybrid (partly remote/partly in office) work schedule, subject to business need and manager approval
