Position Overview

This position serves as a full-time academic advisor for the Mayborn School of Journalism within the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. Advisors will work to promote student success, progression, and timely graduation. They also keep student records up to date, present at informational workshops for students, and assist with events such as Preview Day and Commencement. This position is responsible for advising students on degree/program requirements and course scheduling.

Maintains and updates student status records, transcript evaluations, degree plan audits, and graduation applications. Responsible for taking a leadership role in training and mentoring other advisors, participating in outreach/recruitment activities, managing special projects and/or serving as a subject matter expert on specialized majors and determining how transfer credits apply toward degree requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree and two years' of experience in student affairs, student services, counseling, or professional academic advising.

Job Duties:
  • Performs advanced advising work in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences regarding degree requirements, complex academic issues, interprets and makes decisions regarding academic policies, complex degree audits, and evaluates progress to graduation.
  • Corresponds with students about degree requirements, transfer hours, etc., via various forms of communication. Assists students with exploring other degree options or majors. Serves as on call advisor for the office serving all Journalism majors by answering phone calls, emails and seeing walk ins and/or assisting at the front desk on an as needed basis.
  • Provides information and answers questions for prospective students and parents. Provides appropriate referrals to online and campus resources.
  • Assists in recruitment activities and events. Supports the retention strategies for both the Mayborn School of Journalism and the University of North Texas. Monitors data for both prospective and admitted students. Manages external communications to these cohorts.
  • Prepares, updates and checks degree audits, prioritizing VA, Athletes, Financial Aid and other exceptional degree audits. Evaluates transfer work to determine degree audit applicability.
  • Processes graduation applications. Advises students when complex problems or questions arise. Inform them of discrepancies, GPA, and other requirements.
  • Serves as a resource and problem solver in college orientation sessions. Conducts departmental orientation advising session and academic planning presentations as needed.
  • Reviews and updates four-year plans, catalog copy, encoding in U.achieve, and major specific articulation guides for area community colleges. Researches and recommends approval/disapproval of duplication and equivalency requests from Registrar's Office.
  • Assist with training of Associate Academic Advisors. Serve as a project leader and perform advanced assignments. Manages and prioritizes paperwork or projects for the individuals specific Academic Advisor assignments and maintains procedural documentation for them. Facilitate various retention programs/outreach for targeted populations.
  • Promote goodwill with students and be effective in handling a variety of student situations. Works in a professional cooperative manner with faculty and staff. Greets all office visitors in a friendly, cooperative and helpful manner.

Work Schedule:

Monday-Friday, 8:00a.m. - 5:00p.m.; some evenings, weekends, and off-site
