Position Summary

The primary responsibilities of the Academic Advisor in the Office of Undergraduate Services in the Grady College of Journalism & Mass Communication are to meet with assigned students, provide each student with accurate information about the student's degree program, make recommendations about course selection for upcoming semesters, generate advising forms detailing these recommendations, and maintain notes about these meetings. Advisors will follow each curriculum's plan of study and assist students in receiving necessary permission for required coursework. It is essential that the Academic Advisor is able to engage with students from a variety of backgrounds.

Advisors assist students with referrals to other units at UGA, including tutoring services and other forms of academic assistance. Advisors are expected to have full knowledge of resources that support students in areas other than their academic life and to refer students to appropriate individuals and offices as needed. This position includes advising a combined roster averaging between 250-300 Entertainment and Media Studies and Journalism students, depending on the needs of the office. The ability to advise across both majors involve ongoing cross-training and liaison work with both the Journalism Department and the Entertainment and Media Studies Department.

An Academic Advisor will maintain consistent contact with their students, maintain accurate student records and respond in a timely manner to questions from their students.

Regular attendance at staff meetings is mandatory and workshop attendance is also an expected part of the position. Throughout late May, June, July and early August, Academic Advisors provide orientation advising and program support for incoming first-year and transfer students.

Meet with students to recommend courses for the next semester, prepare advising forms, answer student questions, maintain communication with students via email and phone calls, maintain thorough advising notes about appointments and other contact with students, direct students to appropriate resources, maintain contact with other stakeholders in students' success. This involves extensive prep time and proficiency with various campus systems, software and resources.

This can include, but is not limited to, the Certificate in Academic Advising and the Certificate in Diversity and Inclusion.
