The School of Engineering Medicine at Texas A&M University invites applications for the position of Instructional Assistant Professor, Instructional Associate Professor or Instructional Professor, commensurate with qualifications, and Senior Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and Medical Education. This is a full-time, 11-month, academic professional track (non-tenure) appointment with a start date in the Fall of 2024. The School of Engineering Medicine is headquartered in Houston, Texas, adjacent to the Texas Medical Center.

Responsibilities for this position as faculty include teaching within the School of Engineering Medicine curriculum and academic service to the school and Texas A&M University. Provides leadership in the development of policies and procedures for school programs and accreditation requirements.

This is a critical leadership position for the School of Engineering Medicine and is responsible for leading and directing the education and administrative operations of the school's uniquely blended curriculum. This role serves as a leader within Academic Affairs to promote the school's core mission and goals and ensures the medical education is comparable and equitable as required by accrediting standards. The position is responsible for central oversight of curricular quality and comparability, communication with pre-clerkship faculty and staff, and is the primary point of contact for students on academic affairs related issues. The position reports to the Executive Associate Dean within the School of Engineering Medicine.

Duties include:
  • Provide oversight of the pre-clerkship phase of the MD degree as developed by the School of Engineering Medicine's Curriculum Committee. Ensure the curriculum meets accrediting standards; assisting with the development of strategies to monitor and improve the quality and effectiveness of the pre-clerkship curriculum
  • Develop and maintains policies, processes, guidelines, resources and training for students and faculty in the pre-clerkship phase of training
  • Assist in the management of the pre-clerkship curriculum.

· Facilitates growth and integration of engineering curriculum in collaboration with the College of Engineering

· Support open communications across all faculty/staff, both those within the school as well as those from other colleges.
  • Help in the recruitment and retention of high-quality teaching faculty. Work towards integration of curriculum across all phases of the school's educational program
  • Supervises and evaluates the academic affairs leaders and instructional faculty
  • Work with Pre-Clerkship block and course directors to:
    • Develop, onboard, and implement pre-clerkship blocks and course activities
    • Develop and present curricular recommendations
    • Develop and review curricular roadmap and coordinate pre-clerkship block with other curricular elements (e.g. clinical related courses)
    • Develop and implement and effective developmental assessment system within each course and across courses, collaborating with other units, as needed (e.g., the Office of Evaluation and Assessment and Office of Academic Technology)
  • Ensure appropriate affiliation agreements, MOUs, and PSAs are in place with hospital sites and practitioners (as needed)
  • Update the available capacity at the campus to ensure adequate availability, annually
  • Actively engages in growing student enrollment by examining best practices and innovating solutions to develop a long-term strategic enrollment plan and engaging the entire campus to support the plan
  • Promote the functional integration of faculty by leading the planning and execution of campus and educational site visits, ensuring appropriate participation of faculty in professional development activities within the campus and site system (e.g., bi-annual course director conferences, regional and national conferences, etc.); and promoting campus faculty participation in major student events (e.g., White Coat, Match Day, and Commencement ceremonies)
  • Assist in annual planning, submission, and oversight of the fiscal year operational budget for pre-clerkship education.
  • Serve as a faculty resource and teach in courses relevant to one's educational background and experience
  • Promote scholarly research, seek external funding opportunities, and actively participate in regional and/or national professional organizations
  • Exhibit conduct consistent with the philosophy and mission of the School of Engineering Medicine and demonstrate understanding of accreditation standards and expectations specific to the department/unit and adheres to policies, procedures, and guidelines to meet or exceed such standards
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned


Qualifications

Minimum criteria to be required for an applicant to be deemed qualified (degree, experience):
  • MD, DO, PhD, EdD, JD or other equivalent professional degrees.
  • Administrative and/or educational experience within a medical school, academic medical center, or teaching hospital
  • Experience developing and implementing curriculum
  • Familiarity and experience with Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), Commission on Osteopathic College Accredidation (COCA) or Accredidation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accreditation and accountability standards
  • Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to plan and organize effectively; flexibility to work with others in a variety of circumstances
  • Ability to problem solve by analyzing issues and creating action plans; ability to manage projects and people

Preferred Qualifications: possess current certification by an American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA) Member Board or be eligible for such.
