PED Office of Special Education (OSE):
VISION: All students with disabilities (SWDs) are engaged in high quality curriculum and instruction within inclusive educational environment opportunities that leads to deep learning which results in college, career, and community readiness.

MISSION: The Office of Special Education will provide supports to districts, parents and SWDs to ensure outcomes of a free appropriate public education for students protected under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). We will review data to make decisions that will impact support for SWDs to meet college and career ready standards through equitable access to rigorous courses, high-quality instruction, and appropriate supports.

Why does the job exist?

This Position for the Public Education Department (PED) provides high level support and administrative functions for the Director of the Special Education Division (SED) and for the Deputy Director as needed, and for staff, and for internal and external partners.

How does it get done?

Key responsibilities: Organize office operations and functions; compose letters and other correspondence; coordinate schedules, setup virtual and in person meetings and travel; develop and track special education non-compliance per federal law; communicate effectively with a broad range of educational entities; serve as the liaison to the State Individuals with Disabilities Education Act Part B IDEA-B Advisory Panel; manage in-state and out-of-state travel requests; track corrective action plans, due process hearings and processes resulting from alternative dispute resolutions.

Who are the customers?

Students with disabilities are the principal customers. Other stake-holders are local education agencies and PED staff.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate for the Administrative Assistant/Executive Secretary - Operational position will possess a variety of clerical experience with the ability to adapt to a dynamic environment.

Minimum Qualification

Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico's Driver's License.

Working Conditions

General: Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to VisualNideo Display Terminal and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required. Some occasional travel is required for site visits, meetings and conferences.
