Job Title: Armor-Structure Design Engineer

Department: Product Development

Summary The Armor Engineering role is responsible for the design and development of structural designs and assemblies, as well as ballistic and blast recipes in support of current and future ground combat vehicles. The Armor Engineer will be responsible for identifying material solutions, technologies, and integration methods for protecting the warfighter and vehicle from combat threats. Additionally, this role supports testing required to determine system vulnerability and survivability qualifications.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned
  • Leads project teams comprised of subject matter experts in the area of survivability and structural design.
  • Leads armor / structure design, analysis, simulation, and testing scope utilizing best practices in accordance with the Loc Product Development Process (LPDP).
  • Verify and document design safety margins by performing stress, vibration, contact, and deflection using finite element analysis (FEA).
  • Apply GD&T to accurately communicate functional feature relationships and requirements.
  • Verify component and assembly fit conditions using statistical stack up analyses of drawing dimensional requirements.
  • Develop and release 2D drawings and 3D models utilizing parametric CAD software.
  • Interaction with cross-organizational teams, including manufacturing engineering and quality to assure manufacturability of designed systems/structures.
  • Assessing technical objectives and requirements compliance.
  • Establish the best technical design approach utilizing decision-making trade off processes.
  • Identify / manage technical risks impacting project timing, cost and performance. Develop/lead action plans to mitigate.
  • Lead technical innovations intended to meet Loc's business goals and objectives as Loc expands into new markets.
  • Lead Armor communication internally, as the voice of the customer, and externally with the supply base to keep programs on schedule.
  • Develop / execute test plan for validating design to customer requirements.
  • Support test plan reporting, including if required Root Cause Corrective Action (RCCA) documentation.
  • Train and mentor engineers to support projects, build our core teams and support our people.
  • Constructs engineering artifacts in support of design reviews, including APQP design process documents: DFMEA, DVP&R, etc.
  • Supports the preparation of, prepares engineering reports for, and participates in design reviews.
  • Contributes to the continuous improvement of LPDP

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor's degree (B. S.) in engineering from a four-year college or university and 5 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
