Position Summary:

The Fellowship Director in Addiction Medicine and core faculty member of the Southside Family Medicine Residency will lead a groundbreaking initiative to address the opioid overdose crisis in Milwaukee. This role involves directing the Addiction Medicine Fellowship Program, which prioritizes the delivery of low-threshold Medications for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) services at the Forest Home Health Center and inpatient settings such as Froedtert Hospital. The Director will spearhead workforce development to alleviate the shortage of clinicians equipped to treat opioid use disorders, with a specific focus on health equity, community partnerships, and sustainable medical education. This role will involve significant teaching, advising fellows, residents , and medical students, and participating in scholarly activities. The Fellowship Director will ensure the program's compliance with ACGME requirements , while fostering an environment of clinical and educational excellence.

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Program Leadership and Development:


  • Direct and develop the Addiction Medicine Fellowship, ensuring alignment with ACGME standards and institutional missions.


  • Design and implement a fellowship curriculum that emphasizes low-threshold MOUD services, addiction care, mental health services, and primary care, particularly for vulnerable populations in Milwaukee's most affected communities.


  • Integrate social determinants of health into the fellowship's approach, ensuring that care delivery reduces health disparities and advances health equity in underserved areas.


  • Clinical and Teaching Responsibilities:


  • Provide full scope addiction medicine care and broader primary care services to people who use drugs (PWUD) at the Forest Home Health Center, as well as supervise inpatient consultation services at Froedtert Hospital .


  • Precept and mentor fellows, residents, and medical students, developing their clinical and behavioral health skills in addiction medicine and fostering a compassionate, biopsychosocial approach to care.


  • Teach and supervise fellows in their inpatient rounds and outpatient care, ensuring the program meets the educational goals of producing skilled, knowledgeable addiction medicine clinicians.


  • Community Engagement and Partnerships:


  • Build and strengthen formal partnerships with key community organizations (e.g., United Community Center, Meta House, Veterans Administration) to create a collaborative network that extends addiction care beyond traditional healthcare settings.


  • Engage in community-based initiatives to improve access to care for PWUD, particularly in the 53204 zip code, and develop programs that address housing, peer support, counseling, group therapy, and recovery services.


  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to improve health outcomes for patients, reduce emergency service utilization , and lower readmission rates.


  • Scholarly and Administrative Duties:


  • Foster a culture of scholarly activity among fellows and faculty, promoting research, publications, and quality improvement projects that address the opioid crisis and addiction medicine practices.


  • Ensure the program complies with all ACGME reporting and institutional policies, including timely documentation and verification of fellows' education and performance.


  • Oversee faculty development and approve or remove physicians and non-physician educators based on performance and contribution to the educational mission.


  • Pursue grant funding opportunities to further the development of the primary care addiction medicine enterprise at the forest home health center


  • Medical Education and Training Development:


  • Advance medical education by incorporating a biopsychosocial model of addiction care, ensuring fellows are trained to address the complex bio-psycho-social aspects of addiction.


  • Collaborate with faculty to develop fellows as skilled educators, preparing them to teach in or initiate addiction medicine fellowship programs in their future careers.


  • Lead efforts to destigmatize addiction care through educational initiatives that include the lived experiences of PWUD, promoting empathy and comprehensive care models.

Required Qualifications:

  • MD or DO (foreign medical equivalent).


  • Board Certified/Board Eligible in Addiction Medicine.


  • Graduation from an accredited residency program in Fa mily M edicine


  • Leadership experience in addiction medicine and curriculum development, with a commitment to improving health equity and reducing health disparities.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in curriculum development addressing social determinants of health and community-based addiction care.


  • Strong procedural skills related to addiction medicine and family medicine.


  • Demonstrated ability to lead interdisciplinary teams in clinical, educational, and community settings.


  • Experience in scholarly activities and advancing medical education in addiction medicine.


  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to handle challenging situations calmly and professionally.


  • Experience in providing prenatal care to PWUD, with the opportunity to participate in a multidisciplinary clinic designed to improve the care of this vulnerable patient population
