University of Virginia Housing & Residence Life (HRL) is seeking an Assistant Dean for a key role within Residence Life to help meet current challenges, achieve our strategic initiatives, and bring the University's 2030 plan to fruition. Working within a newly expanded staffing plan, the Assistant Dean will lead, guide, and coach full-time Residence Life Coordinators (RLCs) and Program Coordinators (PCs), who will in turn support our student staff. Assistant Deans also have programmatic responsibility for working with faculty and academic engagement.
The Assistant Dean will assume management of strategic University and Student Affairs priorities, including first-year experience, second-year experience, residential academic programs, and residence life operations.

Assistant Deans have responsibilities in programmatic, student support, and incident response support areas:
- Programmatic responsibilities depend on the particular Assistant Dean's assignment, but may include program design, implementation, and/or support services related to faculty involvement, academic engagement, along with first- and second-year experience.
- Student support responsibilities include mentoring, training, and/or supervising professional staff, graduate staff, and student leaders, as well as helping students solve problems and respond appropriately to challenges and/or crises.
- Finally, Assistant Deans may have responsibilities relating to incident response and crisis management.
- A Master's degree in Student Affairs Administration, Higher Education Administration, or a related field is required.
- An understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion is required, as well as demonstrated leadership and effectiveness in promoting respect and appreciation for diversity and pluralism among students and staff.
- Professional experience in a Housing & Residence Life position is required.
- Experience in residence life and supervising staff is preferred.
- Ability to utilize technology in the delivery of student programs is preferred.
- A minimum of six (6) years of progressive professional experience is required.
- A minimum of seven (7) years of progressive professional experience in Housing & Residence Life is highly preferred.
- A passion for Housing & Residence Life and partnering with student leaders.
- Excellent organizational, oral, and written communication skills.
- The ability to gain students' confidence and provide sound advice to full-time staff, faculty, graduate staff, student staff, and students.
- Resourcefulness, with a talent for knitting together multiple resources, evaluating information, and identifying alternative solutions.
- Capability to work both independently and as part of a team (i.e. provides direct support to senior professionals and completes tasks without immediate supervision).
- Capacity to conceptualize the University's educational mission, strategic aims, and programs, with an understanding of University student culture and the student self-governance model.
