TITLE: Assistant Principal

JOB GOALS: To serve as the assistant instructional and administrative leader of the school

To work with staff, students, and community to ensure a high quality educational program

To support and accomplish the school's mission

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

REPORTS TO: Principal

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. At least a Master's degree from an accredited college or university
  2. Possess and maintain a valid Alabama certificate in school administration/supervision
  3. At least three (3) years' teaching experience
  4. Possess and maintain a valid Alabama Professional Educator Certificate
  5. Comprehensive knowledge of curriculum development, effective classroom practices, and professional development
  6. Knowledge of and ability to identify the unique needs and learning characteristics of students of the school assigned
  7. Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457
  8. Ability to supervise and attend events after school hours
  9. Knowledge and ability to use and facilitate the use of various forms of education technology
  10. Superior leadership, collaboration, and interpersonal skills and ability to be an instructional leader across multiple settings
  11. Comprehensive knowledge of current curriculum and instructional practices and trends.
  12. Ability to work collaboratively as a team member with large and/or diverse groups.
  13. Ability to plan and organize effectively.
  14. Ability to evaluate the work of others.
  15. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  16. Knowledge of school law.
  17. Successful previous experience in maintaining effective discipline.
  18. Ability to plan and conduct faculty meetings.
  19. Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.
  20. Ability to visit classrooms, other schools, and athletic venues
  21. Physical strength, mobility, dexterity, stamina, and acuity to perform job responsibilities.
  22. Proficiency in oral, written, and electronic communications with the ability to produce, lead, and deliver presentations to various stakeholders.
  23. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may require.


PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Demonstrates support for the school system, its purpose, direction, and priorities.
  2. Assists in providing administrative leadership for all staff and students in assigned school.
  3. Assists in conducting staff meetings and training to promote efficient functioning of the school, the curriculum, the athletic program, and the behavior program.
  4. Demonstrates the ability to multitask, to delegate appropriately, and to prioritize tasks efficiently.
  5. Maintains confidentiality of any Board of Education business, its staff, and its students.
  6. Serves as a principal in the absence of the regular principal.
  7. Demonstrates the principles and practice of effective leadership.
  8. Demonstrates and models regular and predictable attendance.
  9. Demonstrates professionalism in appearance and in attitude at all times.
  10. Demonstrates the ability to use technology for communication, presentations, research, data analysis, budgeting, record keeping, reporting, scheduling, and other job responsibilities as required.
  11. Assists principal with assessments, ACIP, and counseling issues that may arise.
  12. Assists principal with curriculum, instruction, developing strategies to help students succeed, observations, interviews, evaluations, and all other items related to instruction.
  13. Assists principal with facility management, maintenance, cleanliness of school, organization of athletic fields, transportation of students, and all other items related to building operations.
  14. Assists principal with personnel issues that may arise.
  15. Assists principal with federal programs implementation and oversight.
  16. Assists principal with disciplining of students, attendance monitoring, referrals, hearings, student behavior, and all other items related to student services.
  17. Assists the principal with special education meetings, identification, behavioral interventions, manifestation hearings, and all other items related to special education.
  18. Assists principal with financial decisions and budgetary management as needed.
  19. Assists principal with technology implementation and training as needed.
  20. Assists principal with the development of newly assigned staff members and assigns mentors as needed.
  21. Assists principal with communications, through staff meetings and written/electronic correspondence, about information that will keep staff informed of policies, procedures and instructional program changes and updates.
  22. Participates in school system meetings, state meetings, and other activities that relate to professional development and effective school operations as assigned.
  23. Assists principal in overseeing the school improvement process and the implementation of school improvement plans, accreditation and accountability reports, and other required plans.
  24. Demonstrates high-expectations for self, for staff, and for students, and creates an environment that has goals that are both rigorous and achievable.
  25. Assists principal with interviewing staff.
  26. Conducts periodic and consistent classroom and personnel observations using approved evaluation tools.
  27. Conducts professional meetings with individual teachers to discuss observations, attendance, and evaluations.
  28. Maintains personnel records and documentation in accordance with school system guidelines under the guidance of the HR Coordinator and the principal.
  29. Demonstrates proficiency using technology to enter data, generate reports, create presentations, and utilize appropriate software as directed.
  30. Supervises extracurricular activities as assigned.
  31. Participates in professional development activities to enhance leadership abilities.
  32. Provides building security and assists in emergency situations, drills, etc. to enhance school safety.
  33. Assists principal in maintaining an up-to-date school calendar and maintaining the day-to-day operations of the school.
  34. Attends and assists with supervision of school system activities, events, ceremonies, and conferences as needed.
  35. Assumes overall responsibility for the school in the absence of the principal.
  36. Models and maintains high ethical standards.
  37. Demonstrates initiative in the performance of assigned responsibilities.
  38. Responds to inquiries and requests in a timely and positive manner.
  39. Demonstrates initiative in identifying opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility.
  40. Responds to inquiries, requests, constructive feedback, concerns and/or complaints in a timely and positive manner.
  41. Maintains and submits required reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner.
  42. Properly cares for equipment and material resources of the school system.
  43. Uses effective collaboration skills to work as a productive team member.
  44. Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures.
  45. Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and
  46. Performs other job-related duties as directed by the principal or Superintendent


SALARY: Based on the Jacksonville City School System Salary Schedule

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 240 days

EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated according to board policy.
