Job Summary/Basic Functions
The University of Mary Washington invites applications for an Assistant Professor of computer science, tenure-track, to begin August 15, 2025. Our close-knit team of ten faculty specializes in working with eager undergraduate students in small classes and in one-on-one mentoring settings. Professors get the opportunity to teach a variety of computer science subjects and also to work hands-on with selected students on research projects of their choosing. We encourage innovative pedagogy, place value on research in computer science education, and foster a teamwork approach to teaching. The normal teaching load is three sections per semester in small classes. Instructors will be expected to engage in professional development and perform service in support of the students, the program, and the institution.
The candidate must have earned a Ph.D. in Computer Science or a closely related field or have made substantial progress toward completing her/his dissertation. The department is particularly interested in candidates with a specialization in cybersecurity, however, all candidates with any specialty and a strong interest in teaching core computer programming courses and undergraduate research are encouraged to apply. Additional required qualifications are commitment to teaching at the undergraduate level and the ability to teach a variety of computer science topics. Highly-qualified candidates will be able to demonstrate dedication to effective teaching and high-impact learning, demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills and have an interest in collaborating with undergraduate students in research.
UMW is a public liberal arts and sciences university dedicated to effective teaching and the integration of undergraduate students in research. The department has undergone an expansion thanks to new resources provided by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Recently recognized as a "Great College to Work For" by the Chronicle of Higher Education, UMW is centrally located between Washington, DC and Richmond, VA, in close proximity to many government labs and private contractors offering opportunities for collaborative research and student internship opportunities.
For additional information and to apply for this position, please visit https://jobs.umw.edu/jobs/search. Candidates are required to complete a Commonwealth of Virginia application and are also asked to electronically submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae, statement of teaching philosophy, research statement and the contact information for three references.
The preferred deadline for applications is October 11, 2024. The University of Mary Washington accepts only completed online applications. Faxed, mailed, or e-mailed applications will not be considered.
