About the College/Unit/Department

The Department of Crop and Soil Sciences resides in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, which has teaching, research, and outreach programs at three campuses across the state: Athens, Griffin, and Tifton. The department has teaching, research, and extension faculty at all three locations which conduct basic and applied research that is important to clientele in the state of Georgia and that adds to the body of knowledge basic to agricultural production and environmental management. The Department has faculty with expertise that can be grouped into three general areas: cultivar development, genetics, and biotechnology; crop management, physiology, weed management; and environmental sciences and natural resource management.

The Griffin Campus of the University of Georgia lies in the heart of one of the nation's fastestgrowing areas and is located just 30 miles south of Atlanta's Hartsfield International Airport (https://griffin.uga.edu/). The research and extension programs at the Griffin Campus focus on the following areas: turfgrass science; food safety and quality enhancement; biotechnology and genetics; crop and pest management; environmental and natural resource management; and urban agriculture. The Griffin main campus lies on 123 acres and includes four outlying research farms. The Crop and Soil Science unit at Griffin consists of 8 faculty and 9 support staff, while the Campus has 48 faculty and 109 support staff and houses the UGA Center for Urban Agriculture. Position Summary

The Department of Crop and Soil Science is seeking an Assistant Professor for the University of Georgia, Griffin Campus. The position is a 9 (+2)-month, tenure-track position in Turfgrass Weed Management with 60% Extension, 35% research and 5% service.

This position is responsible for developing a nationally/internationally recognized Extension and applied research program focused on the management of weeds in turfgrass and noncropland systems. The position is expected to collaborate with UGA Turfgrass Team members and provide timely, holistic information on weed management in turfgrass and noncropland grass systems.

Additional Requirements

The candidate will have strong credentials in Weed Science that relate to the job responsibilities, including expertise with weed identification and taxonomy. The incumbent should have a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively, secure extramural funding and publish research findings and outreach education materials.

Duties/Responsibilities

Provide leadership in developing extension and research programs for the management of weeds in turfgrass and noncropland areas. Coordinate educational outreach programs to assist the turfgrass industry, county Extension Agents, and various state and federal agencies. Research responsibilities will be flexible depending on the expertise and interest of the scientist but related to weed management in turfgrass and noncropland areas. The individual will be expected to develop a nationally/internationally prominent program, attract extramural funding, publish peer-reviewed journal articles, extension publications, and popular press articles, and participate in graduate student training.
