Duties & Responsibilities

PURPOSE OF POSITION

Assess, evaluate, plan, educate and implement nursing care of the patient inclusive of medication administration

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES

Behavioral Health

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Models critical and reflective thinking practices for peers
2. Utilizes adult education methods and practical approaches for developing and assessment clinical skills in unit orientees.
3. Assist with implementation of nursing in-service and staff development.
4. Collaborate with education and research nurse educators, head nurses and clinicians to assess and meet education needs of practicing nurses in behavioral health clinical settings.
5. Demonstrate work-related tasks and serve as a role model in the provision of patient care.
6. Participate in a multidisciplinary approach to patient care and evaluation with orientee.
7. Serve as a resource and/or preceptor in the education of newly hired nurses.
8. Participate in unit nursing staff meetings, as well as other appropriate departmental meetings.
9. Maintain documentation of educational activities.
10. Provide timely reports to the Associate Director regarding services delivered.
11. Attend hospital's mandatory orientation program.
12. Valid BCLS by American Heart on file

Clinical
1. Participate in multidisciplinary meetings e.g. daily morning rounds, treatment team planning, in-service training - by unit, department, and discipline, Department of Psychiatry Committee meetings, quality assurance activities.
2. Conduct patient interviews and perform holistic initial nursing assessment on admission and discharge
3. Evaluate, plan educate and implement nursing care of the patient .
4. Utilize, complete and document in EMR all screening/assessment tools on admission and as per policy as pertain to Psychiatric patients (BROSET, CSSRS, ELOPEMENT, CIWA , CINA, AUDIT C, PSP)
5. Prepare and perform Medication administration
6. Conduct/co-facilitate nursing education groups
7. Document in EMR per tour progress of patient
8. Participate and document in the Comprehensive Treatment Plan
9. Assist with performing diagnostic procedures within scope of practices(EKG, phlebotomy ,vital signs, IV insertion)
10. Participate in and guide ancillary staff in patient care activities special to psychiatry e.g. community meetings, small group patient meetings, use of seclusion and suicide precautions, elopement risks.
11. Ensure that a safe therapeutic environment is maintained.
12. Ensure safety of patients going off unit or offsite to diagnostic or therapeutic activities.
13. Support efforts for positive patient outcomes and positive patient perception of care.
14. Participates in patient-family or family conferences.

Unit Leadership and Daily Management
1. Acts as Charge nurse as assigned in the absence of Head Nurse or Assistant Head Nurse.
2. Delegates assignment to team members based on patient acuity and skill level of team member.
3. Investigates and intervenes on problems and occurrences involving staff and/or patients and reports these in a timely fashion using the line of communication and following established policies.
4. Expedites bed flow by reporting patient admissions and discharges promptly.
5. Conforms to and promotes observance of policies and procedures established by the Department of Nursing/Patient Care Services as well as Safety and Infection Control regulations.
6. Checks availability and readiness of Code Blue cart as assigned.
7. Checks and maintains par level of unit supplies and medications.
8. Functions in a calm manner during crisis situations including Code Grey and Code Blues.
9. Participates in the unit based quality assurance monitoring activities.

Self-Development:
1. Identifies own learning needs and seeks opportunities for self-development.
2. Attends nursing related continuing education activities that are scheduled within and outside the hospital.
3. Participates in nursing and hospital committees when called upon.

Personnel Policies and Procedures/Attendance/Punctuality
1. Acts as a role model for professional behavior including being in conformance with policies and procedures established by the hospital and the Department of Nursing/Patient Care Services.
2. Observes attendance and notification of absence regulations established by the Department of Nursing/Patient Care Services.
3. Arrives and leaves the unit according to time regulations and takes breaks as scheduled.
4. Observes uniform code of the Department of Nursing/Patient Care Services.

Minimum Qualifications

For individuals holding an unrestricted registered professional nursing license BEFORE July 1,
2020 in New York State, another state or United States territory:
1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse
in New York State; and
2. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life
Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA); and
3. Six (6) months of experience as a registered nurse.
For individuals issued a registered professional nursing license on or AFTER July 1, 2020,
based on expected implementation of Chapter 502 of the Laws of 2017 and Chapter 380 of the
Laws of 2018:
1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional
Nurse in New York State; and
a. A Bachelor's of Science degree in Nursing or higher (or other nursing degree, as identified by NYS
Education Department including Master of Science in Nursing, Doctor of Nursing Practice, Doctor of
Philosophy Degree in Nursing or Doctor of Nursing Science) from an accredited college or
university, registered with the NYSED; or
b. Obtains a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Nursing or higher, as described in "a" above, within ten
(10) years of the date of initial licensure; and
2. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life
Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA); and
3. Six (6) months of experience as a registered nurse.
