The successful candidates will perform highly specialized maintenance, inspections and repairs to the cities diverse fleet of automotive vehicles and small equipment.

The technician (mechanic) will work out of our new state-of-the-art facility located at 3316 S. Military Hwy.

Class A CDL training is provided by the city at no cost to employees. The twenty-hour mandatory behind the wheel time is conducted while on the clock...get paid to train! Vehicles for DMV road testing are also provided.

Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Uses state of the art OEM level diagnostic equipment to inspect, diagnose, repair, calibrate and align automotive vehicles.
  • Performs routine maintenance such as building up, repairing and changing tires.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on automotive vehicles, trailers and small equipment.
  • Performs major repairs such as engine and transmission repair, overhaul or exchange.
  • Performs service and repair of complex sub-assemblies in automotive vehicles.
  • Performs post-pursuit vehicle inspections on Public Safety vehicles.
  • May perform vehicle modifications such as installing or removing special equipment, lighting, or other modifications.
  • Performs Virginia safety inspections.
  • Performs shop or area maintenance such as general clean up around both the interior and exterior of the shop and property.
  • Prepares documentation such as work order notes, repairs completed, parts used, repair cost, and other information.
  • Provides advice, training and assistance to vehicle or equipment operators as necessary.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
Vocational/Educational Requirement: Requires high school diploma or GED and any combination of education and experience equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education in automotive mechanics, or a closely related field.

Experience:
Automotive Technician I: One year of related, full-time equivalent experience.
Automotive Technician II: Two years of related, full-time equivalent experience.

Special Certifications and Licenses: Requires a valid driver's license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards. Must be able to obtain a Class A CDL and ASE Certification within probationary period.

Special Requirements:Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Ford IDS / FDRS diagnostic software
  • Experience with Snap-On diagnostic platforms
  • Experience with automotive electrical
