Job Description:

This is a senior level Biological Scientist position in a research lab studying extracellular matrix/proteoglycans in a wide range of diseases including lung injury and development, pulmonary and vascular biology, pulmonary surfactants, innate immunity, infections, and cancer. The Biological Scientist is expected to be able to 1. Maintain a necessary rodent colony to achieve research objectives; 2. Conduct rodent procedures as necessary to complete research objectives; 3. Oversee their execution assigned experiments; 4. Design laboratory experiments; 5. Develop/Edit protocols to improve existing techniques or to incorporate new diagnostic procedures; 6. Review, approve, or interpret scientific results; 7. Present researching findings to PI, at laboratory meetings and at scientific meetings; 8. Responsible for the management of laboratory functions; 9. Maintain laboratory safety programs and train personnel in laboratory safety techniques; and 10. Actively patriciate in the writing of grants, papers, and statements of work

The Biological Scientist III Must be able to perform the following essential functions:

Animal Studies: Responsible for the management of all rodent lines to achieve research objects. Develop, organize, and conduct experimental studies with live specimens. Handling mice for setting up timed matings, weaning animals and maintaining colonies. Participating in all rodent procedures. Ensuring compliance with IACUC and NIH standards.

Molecular Techniques and Analysis: Molecular cloning, Plasmid purification, Primer design, RNA and DNA isolation, isolating RNA and performing real-time PCR, and PCR genotyping of transgenic mouse lines. Participate in in-vitro studies. This may include expansion/maintenance of cell lines and analysis of transfection/infection. Performing protein analysis by isolating protein of interest from cell or tissue and performing/analyzing western blots. Ability and knowledge to study signaling pathways.

Histology Analysis: Collecting organs and other tissue and embedding the specimens for sectioning either with a microtome or cryotome (for frozen sections). Following preparation of slides with sectioned tissue, staining with standard histology stains such as H&E, as well as with immunohistochemistry/immunofluorescence will be done. Participating in the image capture and analysis of tissue following intervention studies. This includes treating mice, collecting tissue and processing it for analysis.

Laboratory Management: Ensuring compliance with all regulatory bodies (IACUC, IRB, EH&S, Etc). Categorizing and storing sensitive scientific materials/instruments. Assisting administration in the reconciling of charges in accordance with cost accounting standards. Orders supplies for the research laboratory.

Other: Perform tasks and experiments as directed by the Principal Investigator.

Expected Salary:

$61,800 - $62,400 annually

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in biology or a closely related field and seven years of relevant experience; or a Master's degree in biology or a closely related field and five years of relevant experience; Doctoral degree in biology or a closely related field and two years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
-Experience in proteoglycans and glycosaminoglycan research is an important qualification.
-5+ years of animal colony management and handling of rodent experience.
-Advanced degree in related scientific field.
-Peer reviewed scientific publications in related scientific field.
