Job Description and Duties
Under the supervision of a Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor or Caltrans Landscape Maintenance Leadworker, the incumbent maintains functional and landscape plantings, performs weed control and soil sterilization, maintains irrigation systems, oversees the work of MPRO (County Probationers) workers, performs homeless encampment removal and graffiti abatement. Involves heavy manual labor. Will operate light vehicles and equipment, must possess a valid Class C drivers license. Incumbent may also be assigned any duties normally performed by the Caltrans Highway Maintenance Worker classification.
Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. Working Conditions
Positions located in Foster City, San Mateo, Woodside, Millbrae, Daly City
The incumbent may expect to work in all types of weather with temperatures ranging from 20 to 100 degrees, strong winds, rain, fog, sleet, and flooding; may be exposed to poison oak, insect bites, loud noise, dust, chemicals, flying debris, high speed vehicle traffic adjacent to the work zone. The work can be physically demanding and require stamina, agility, and strength. The incumbent is subject to sunburn, poison oak, snake, insect bites, loud noise, dust, and chemicals. The job has an added hazard due to most of the work being in close proximity to vehicular traffic. May be at risk of injury working with or around equipment. May have to work in wetlands or woodlands. Will be required to travel and stay overnight to attend mandatory classes. May be required to work rotating shifts including nights and weekend; shift may change due to emergencies such as floods, earthquakes, and storms.
New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.
