1. Demonstrates competence in the performance of duties and responsibilities related to transporting patients and department protocols and devices.
a. Patient Identification - introduces self and properly confirms patient identification prior to moving patient.
b. Safely assists in the loading and unloading of patients either through the use of wheelchair lifts or stool
c. Anxiety reduction - minimizes apprehension or uneasiness to the procedure demonstrated by providing reassurance, acceptance and encouragement.
d. Securely fastens wheelchairs inside vans, securing wheelchairs in four points and fastening seatbelt
e. Contacts patients via the phone to arrange pick-up times so the patient can arrive before appointment time. Take home assigned patients after their appointment
f. Operates Care-Van while obeying all traffic laws.
g. Assists patient to their department and collects patients for their return.
2. Demonstrates competence in the performance of duties and responsibilities related to patient care and patient education.
. Provides accurate explanations and instructions at an appropriate time, place and level of understanding to the patient.
a. Active Listening - attends closely to and attaches significance to a patient's verbal and non-verbal communication; refers questions about diagnosis or treatment to the patient's nurse.
b. Patient Comfort / Anxiety Reduction - determines the need for accessing patient transportation (i.e. wheelchair,) to maintain a high level of patient care. Provides reassurance, encouragement and emotional support.
c. Keeps patient wait times to a minimum by collaborating with Dispatch and departments.
d. Utilizes patient cooperation and modifies action plan according to changes in clinical situations.
e. Fall Prevention - Institutes special precautions with patients at risk for injury from falling.
3. Quality Performance Standard - performs necessary duties and a variety of support functions to enhance efficiency of hospital operations.
. Assesses equipment to determine acceptable performance and informs supervisor of equipment problem
a. Cleans, disinfects and sterilizes equipment, maintains adequate levels of supplies.
b. Washes vans as needed. Fuels van when the tank reaches half.
c. Operates two-way and dispatch radio systems in emergency situations. Operates phones while following all laws.
d. Assist in administering first aid or providing life support in emergent situations, respond to codes as dispatched and required, ability to work efficiently; cope and respond well with emergent situations.
4. Demonstrates competence in the performance of duties and responsibilities related to compliance.
. JCAHO - follows established Joint Commission policies and procedures for National Patient Safety Goals.
a. Adheres to Corporate Compliance policies and the Code of Ethics; works within their professional scope of practice.
b. Participates in QC/QA/PI programs; submits report documentation within specified time frame set by department standard.
c. Provides timely, accurate and complete documentation of near misses, occurrences and action plans.
d. Infection Control - minimizes the acquisition and transmission of infectious diseases; assures standard precautions are maintained and follows established hospital policies governing hand hygiene guidelines.
e. EOC - maintains knowledge and awareness of emergency code activation and fire plan; follows policies and procedures to maintain a safe environment for both patients and staff.
5. Demonstrates competence in the performance of duties and responsibilities related to professional performance expectations.
. Displays professional etiquette by demonstrating our core values toward coworkers, the public and other healthcare providers.
a. Monitors and seeks feedback on personal work ethics, behaviors and attitude; communicates openly and respectfully; proactively engages in conflict resolution discussions.

b. Performs job functions in a timely manner with accuracy; utilizes department specific programs efficiently and consistently produces output of sufficient volume.
c. Assures compliance with Kronos and accurately completes all payroll functions within specified time frame.
7. Demonstrates competence in the performance of duties and responsibilities related to transporting patients to and from the hospital in an approved vehicle (i.e. Care Vans).
. Comply with all D.O.T. standards and regulations, maintaining a clean driving record and background check. Operate Care Van and/or Hand in Hand van using defensive driving skills.
a. Uses appropriate customer service skills in dealing with patients, visitors and staff requesting Care Van and/or Hand in Hand Van services.
b. Schedules patients for Care Van service when applicable and prioritize patients each morning to assure patient arrival in time for appointment.
c. Operates the Care Van wheelchair lift safely and properly. Complete Care Van maintenance check sheet before each use and report any malfunctions immediately.
d. Inspects vans for cleanliness and assures that gas tank has been filled at the end of each shift. Know the car wash process and ensure the vans are washed when necessary.
e. Complete Care Van and/or Hand in Hand Daily Log form, with accuracy, after each shift.
Qualifications
Experience Minimum Required
• 6 mos customer service exp.
Experience Preferred/Desired
• 3 to 12 months experience in EMS patient transport.
• 2 years customer service experience
Education Minimum Required
• High School Diploma or equivalent
Education Preferred/Desired
• EMT or NREMT Basic or Intermediate within one year
Special Skills Minimum Required
• Outstanding communication and customer service skills.
• Ability to follow directions and prioritize tasks.
• Comfortable driving in inclement weather.
• Clean driving record.
Licensure and/or Certifications Required
• AHA BLS (within 14 days of hire), Driver's License
• D.O.T Medical Health Report ( within 30 days of hire)
• D.O.T Defensive Driving Course (w/in 30 days of hire)
