SUMMARY OF POSITION

Under general supervision of the Parks and Recreation Director, this position provides the opportunity to perform a full range of duties related to the functions of the Department, such as Athletics, Aquatics, Facility Management, Recreational Camps, Special Events, Parks Development, and Parks Maintenance. As a member of the Parks and Recreation Department you will have the opportunity to work on real projects that align with your interests and career aspirations.

Your role in the group is an important one, your work is taken seriously, and you are counted on as a contributing member of a team. This internship will culminate in the implementation, as practical, and presentation of a final project that will contribute to both the City of McKinney and your academic and professional development.

Essential Functions/Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

This list of functions below is intended to be representative of potential tasks. Specific responsibilities shall be determined by the Parks and Recreation Director, or assignee, and inclusion of a task herein does not guarantee that it will be assigned. Moreover, the omission of a function does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed herein if such functions are critical to the operations of the Department and/or related to a specific project.
  • Assists with researching local, state and national programs, policies, etc. to ensure our department is at or above standard.
  • Assists with collecting site data and developing recommendations to improve our parks system.
  • Assists with planning and marketing programs and special events.
  • Assist in class development, instructor recruitment, class schedule/coordination, marketing and promotions for classes, creating surveys and compiling data from feedback, etc.
  • Assists with preparing a wide variety of promotional literature for the endorsement of our facilities, programs, events, and overall communications for the Parks and Recreation Department.
  • Assists with registering program participants, maintaining information by keeping classes, fees, etc. current, inputting new programs, etc.
  • Assists with preparing weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual reports on class registrations, memberships, usage, revenue, etc.
  • Assists with developing, promoting, and coordinating sponsorship opportunities in regard to recreation programs and activities.
  • Assists with responding appropriately to citizen inquiries and routes calls to the appropriate City personnel as needed.
  • Assists with recommending supplies needed for operations and researching cost effective alternatives.
  • Works a flexible schedule that may include weekends, evenings, and holidays and maintain regular attendance as required.
  • Drives a City vehicle or small engine equipment as needed
  • Performs a variety of miscellaneous office duties such as answering phones, typing, filing and other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the below Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the below specified education and experience requirements.

Must be currently enrolled in college or university. Must have excellent communication skills, both written and oral and ability to work courteously with the public. Should be self-motivated and able to stay on task with a minimal amount of direction.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, and Access) is preferred.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Must pass a drug screen and background check.
  • Must have Class C Texas Driver's License
Physical Demands/Supplemental

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation. Some tasks require visual perception and discrimination and oral communications ability. Some task may require you to travel through the city and work outside

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is typically performed in both standard office and outdoor environments. Incumbents may be exposed to construction equipment with moving mechanical parts. Other tasks may involve exposure to outdoor elements such as rain, cold, heat and wind, etc. This job requires the ability to work in extreme heat or cold conditions outside when necessary. There is limited exposure to environmental conditions.
