Location: Remote with occasional on-site work as assignment dictate.

Hours: (must live reasonable distance from location) M-F, 8:30-5:00, with some flexibility due to events and assignments.

Working as part of the Penn Medicine Communications department, the Communications Manager will serve as internal and external communications manager for Penn Medicine's Office of Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity as well as Penn Medicine's educational enterprise, including the medical school, doctoral, master's, and certificate programs and residency and fellowship training programs.

Reporting to the Senior News Director and in close collaboration with leaders in their assigned areas, they will work to devise and execute strategic communications approaches to strengthen the image and awareness of educational programs in PSOM and Penn Medicine's inclusion, diversity, and equity efforts for both internal constituents (students, faculty, and staff) and external groups including the media and alumni. Internal communications responsibilities include time-sensitive written messages, scheduled reports, and creation of regular newsletter content, among others.

External communications responsibilities include creating materials and generating media placements in regional and national media outlets on advances in medical education and Penn Medicine's thought leadership and activities to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in medicine.

The Communications Manager will also contribute to institutional social media content and assist with website strategy and maintenance, and act as a consultant to students and student groups on messaging, newsletters, and media training.




Accountabilities

  • Develop and manage communications strategies across named programs.
  • For education-related work, facilitate the sharing of information between leadership and students via email; develop innovative ways to enhance communication using physical and electronic collateral (email newsletters, banners, electronic signage, etc.) and social media.
  • For diversity, equity, and inclusion-related work, develop and implement a communications strategy to drive awareness of and action to support institutional DEI agenda and initiatives, as well as reporting on key achievements and work in progress and providing support to committees supporting the Action for Cultural Transformation (ACT) initiative
  • Engage with media to pitch and secure news stories about Penn Medicine faculty, students, staff, and research.
  • Write press releases, blog posts, news articles, and newsletter copy to promote high-profile institutional news and happenings.
  • Gather information and participate in collaborative, strategic decision-making and liaising with PSOM departments to guide communications strategy about both routine and timely/high priority messages.
  • Devise, refine, and implement website strategies; work with faculty and senior staff to create content for websites, keeping content updated and engaging, in consultation with the PSOM web team.
  • Work in partnership with the leaders of the main Penn Medicine social media channels to promote key education and DEI content.
  • Promote and build audiences for internal events. Oversee the creation of electronic promotional materials, including and, when needed, produce print materials such as program booklets and flyers.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in departments including Development, Marketing, and Human Resources.
  • Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures
  • Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization

Minimum Requirements

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Journalism, English or a related area of study and 8+ years of Experience in non-profit, educational, or scientific or healthcare writing, strategic communications, and related work.
Or

  • Master's Degree in Communications, Journalism, English or a related area of study and 5+ years of Experience in non-profit, educational, or scientific or healthcare writing, strategic communications, and related work.
  • Experience in education, science or medical settings is preferred.
  • Experience with or demonstrated interest in diversity and inclusion related communications work is preferred.
