The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) is the state agency responsible for ensuring clean air and water, the safe management of toxics and hazards, the recycling of solid and hazardous wastes, the timely cleanup of hazardous waste sites and spills, and the preservation of wetlands and coastal resources.

Environmental Justice (EJ) Environmental Analyst (EA)

This program runs from June 2024 - October 2024

As part of the region's EJ Initiative, The EJ EA Intern will participate in a comprehensive environmental assessment in Holyoke. The Intern will conduct an environmental assessment of urban recreational settings to complement and support the identification of potential environmental sources of contamination, which can impact resident's quality of life.

The Intern will conduct research to identify areas of urban fill and/or landfill sites and identify the current and proximal land use at the site. The deliverable product will be a report with tables describing identified sites and suggested next steps and GIS map of identified sites. This will complement ongoing air monitoring assessment work in the area.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong skills in the use of Microsoft Suite (EXCEL, WORD, PowerPoint)
  • Skill in data management and analysis
  • Basic understanding of initial environmental site assessment
  • Basic knowledge of reading maps
  • Basic knowledge of GIS mapping
  • Basic research
  • Spanish fluency would be helpful
  • Basic understanding of Environmental Justice
