Employer: Massachusetts General Hospital(MGH)
Industry: Data/Analytics
Salary: Competitive
Job type: Full-Time

GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

The Massachusetts General Hospital Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit is recruiting a highly motivated individual to assist with ongoing and future clinical research studies. The research focus of this group is patients requiring critical care for acute neurological or neurosurgical illnesses, including traumatic brain injury, seizures, and aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. We seek to understand and predict in-hospital neurologic worsening and subsequent recovery as well as measure the effects of treatment interventions in order to provide optimal precision medicine. Our group specifically utilizes continuous invasive and noninvasive neuromonitoring and EEG, continuous vital sign telemetry, and neuroimaging as well as electronic health record data and clinician interviews to provide clinical context.

We are seeking a highly motivated individual to work collaboratively with a team of clinicians, computational engineers, and research coordinators. The incumbent will apply principles of bioinformatics and data science to assist scientists in making progress on problems like the ones described above. The incumbent must possess a strong programming background, expertise in data wrangling (including pre-processing and cleaning big data sets), and be able to apply bioinformatics tools to visualize, analyze, manipulate, or interpret bioinformatics data. The incumbent will also help build and maintain databases for processing biological information, including clinical data and biomedical signals, including neurophysiologic data (e.g., scalp EEG), and the drive and enthusiasm to learn about clinical neuroscience and patient-centered research.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Explore large databases of electronic medical data to identify predictors of health and disease, and clinical trajectories in acute care.

• Engineer data for target trials within electronic health records to evaluate drug repurposing candidates.

• Prepare data packages for regulatory bodies, such as NIH.

• Build and process input datasets for machine-learning models.

• Write code using a collaborative version control system, ensuring proper documentation and reproducible workflows.

• Work closely with other computational scientists and physicians to design and perform analyses.

• Assist in preparation of manuscripts as well as abstracts and presentations for scientific meetings.

• Assist with harmonization of data schema across different data ecosytems.

Qualifications

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

• Strong programming skills in Matlab and Python are required

• Comfortable using Linux environments.

• Experience with statistical analysis and databases is strongly preferred.

• Knowledge of neuroscience and experience with medical data is desirable.

• Excellent organizational and communication skills - demonstrated ability to work well within multi-disciplinary teams.

• Ability to work independently and take initiative when necessary.

• Highly motivated and able to meet deadlines.

EDUCATION:

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, or related quantitative discipline is required.
