The Deputy Director provides California State Summer School for the Arts with policy and program development, as well as budget, finance and contracting oversight for the agency. The position supervises two SSMI positions. The Deputy Director is required to live on-site during the summer session(s) within faculty housing, and they maintain 24/7 on-call duties while the school is in session. The position is remote-centered when the summer program is not in session. The position reports to the Director of the agency.

    California State Summer School for the Arts (CSSSA) provides California's high school students with an immersive, industry-relevant training program to study and practice the arts. The summer program cultivates the State's young artists to pursue careers in the visual arts, performing arts and writing arts within the commercial and fine arts industries in California. The creative industries comprises one of the largest business sectors in the state.

    General Qualifications
    State civil service employees must possess essential general qualifications including integrity, initiative, dependability, good judgment, and ability to work cooperatively with others.
    Knowledge and Abilities
    Applicants must demonstrate the ability to perform high administrative and policy - influencing functions effectively. Such overall ability requires possession of most of the following more specific knowledge and abilities:

    Selected candidates must posses a broad knowledge of; organization and functions of annual budgeting including compliance with budget regulations; education trends and best practices; organization and program management; techniques of organizing and motivating student groups; methods of administrative problem solving; provisions of federal and state education regulations and best practices; principles and methods of administering curriculum; administrative practices and coordination of education programs; principles of personnel management and supervision.

    Selected candidates must possess the ability to: plan, organize, direct the work of a professional and administrative staff; analyze and implement program legislation; develop and implement administrative policies and procedures; integrate the activities of diverse groups to attain common goals; engage top-level administrators and Board Members on a wide range of administrative matters; develop cooperative working relationships with summer host site administration and program faculty; analyze complex problems and recommend effective courses of action; speak effectively before large and small diverse groups; and prepare and review reports on a variety of subjects; effectively promote equal opportunity in employment and maintain a work environment that is free of discrimination and harassment.

    These knowledge and abilities are expected to be obtained from the following kinds of experience with substantial participation in the formulation, operation and/or evaluation of program policies (experience may have been paid or volunteer; in State service, other government settings, or in a private organization):

    CEA Level A - Responsible for broad administrative and program activities, including the execution and/or evaluation of program policies.

    CEA Level B - Responsible for extensive managerial and program administration or broad program manager experience with substantial participation in the formulation, operation, and/or evaluation of program policies.

    CEA Level C - Responsible for extensive highly professional influence and contributes to program, policy, and the methods to provide professional services needed to set policies, to meet the mission of the State department and often exercising technical and or professional skills that are required at this level.

    Desirable Qualifications In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
  • Experience and expertise in analyzing, developing, implementing, and reporting on budget in compliance with state budget regulations and policies.
  • Experience developing and implementing procurement processes.
  • Experience and expertise with best hiring and contracting practices.
  • Experience and expertise with FI$Cal, or other financial databases, providing administrative support and staff training.
  • Experience overseeing inclusive educational programming and curriculum.
  • Experience in effective and efficient staff development, team building, and hands-on training and administrative support.
  • Experience and familiarity working with local and state education programs.
  • Experience and ability to speak effectively before large and small groups, representing the Department to a variety of stakeholders, including Board Members, arts organizations, school district and county offices of education.

    Examination Information

    The examination process will consist of an application, a resume and Statement of Qualifications evaluation. The Statement of Qualifications will be used to evaluate your education and experience as it relates to the "Desirable Qualifications" listed above, and will also serve as documentation of each candidate's ability to present information clearly and concisely in writing since this is a critical factor to successful job performance. The Statement of Qualifications will be the only basis for your final score and rank on the eligible list.

Your performance in the examination will be compared with the performance of others who take this examination, and all successful candidates will be ranked according to their scores.

    A minimum rating of 70% must be attained in the Examination to obtain list eligibility for this position. All candidates will receive written notification of their examination results.
