Position Information

TxDOT's Bridge Division - Design Section is looking to hire a Bridge Design Lead Engineer based in Austin, TX. In the Bridge Division - Design Section, we oversee activities pertaining to the creation of in-house bridge, railing, and traffic structures design, and plan preparation; intelligent 3D bridge modeling; research implementation; bridge standards development; historic bridge preservation; bridge design policy; and bridge detailing guidance. This individual will lead a group of approximately 8 to 10 engineers, engineering assistants, and CADD technicians that produce structural designs and detailed plan sets for our District clients and the state of Texas.

Position Description

Transportation Engineer V:

Performs highly advanced and complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations, maintenance and/or research. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product.

Essential Duties:

  • Designs highly complex bridge projects and performs specialized design.
  • Develops specifications for special bridge design details and projects.
  • Leads/Trains professional and administrative staff.
  • Makes presentations and represents TxDOT.
  • Performs highly complex structural analysis of bridge designs.
  • Reviews and checks special designs and solutions for unique structural problems.
  • Reviews designs and detailed drawings of bridges and related structures prepared by other engineers and technicians.
  • Serves as a project manager overseeing consultants performing advanced and complex engineering work.
  • Trains engineering staff
  • Coordinates and/or monitors assigned projects/programs/plans.
  • Updates, reviews, monitors, and/or reviews requests for changes to plans, manuals and/or standard sheets.
  • Chairs or serves as a member of a contract selection team.
  • Develops and supports implementation activities for new methods, procedures, and technologies.
  • Reviews and provides guidance on research project reports and other deliverables.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.

Experience: 8 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience. Preferred 5 years of which fulfilled as a Texas Licensed Professional Engineer (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis . Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

*Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States , but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.

  • Structural engineering terminology, principles, practices and methods and the application of engineering theory
  • Standards and specifications for bridges and other transportation structures
  • Applicable plans, specifications and estimates preparation, review, processing and compliance requirements
  • Design and plan preparation methods and requirements

  • Applying engineering principles, practices and methods in job responsibilities
  • Establishing plans and setting objectives and goals that support overall business strategy/results; anticipating and adjusting for problems/roadblocks
  • Negotiating settlement of differences without damaging relationships; applying effective questioning and listening techniques to determine other parties' positions in a direct and diplomatic manner
  • Speaking to present images and ideas in a clear, concise, organized, and interesting manner to optimize audience understanding and keep the group focused
  • Planning, coordinating and handling multiple projects within area of responsibility to meet short and long term deadlines
  • Leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others
  • Coordinating and directing multiple projects
  • Assisting in planning, assigning, directing, coordinating and reviewing the work of professional, administrative and technical employees
  • Initiates and supports quality management activities and performance management measures to provide the highest quality products and services that meet the needs and requirements of internal and external customers


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
