About the opportunity:

Reporting to the Senior Director of Community Behavioral Health, the Director of Inpatient Behavioral Health will oversee all clinical behavioral health services provided within the Precourt Healing Center (PHC) and will also, in collaboration with the Director of Outpatient Behavioral Health, provide continuum services through a transition and discharge high acuity outpatient clinic.

The Director of Inpatient Behavioral Health is responsible for overall Behavioral Health service delivery within the PHC. This role ensures the highest quality of clinical care delivery, while also maintaining excellence in record keeping, data compliance, and Electronic Health Record management that consistently meets and exceeds all clinical, local, state, federal, and regulatory standards. As clinical services are provided inpatient, but billed as professional services, this position must hold expertise in both inpatient and The Joint Commission standards, as well as applicable outpatient standards, such as Behavioral Health Administration, Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment, and Rocky Mountain Health Plans (RAE1) requirements.

The Director of Behavioral Health coordinates PHC Behavioral Health team including individual, family, couples, psychological assessment, and clinical group. This position is responsible for coordinating, scheduling, and overseeing the recreation, wellness, and contract clinicians to ensure clinical care delivery across all 7 days. This position also closely works with the PHC administrative position to assess access to care and monitors patient and support system needs to prioritize provider and patient needs. This position acts in a community leadership role to ensure the clinical services at PHC are represented at a leadership level.

What you will do:
  • Clinical Patient Care: Provides direct patient care. This includes but is not limited to supporting and providing coverage for clinical services and carrying a selective caseload of patients either on unit or through a discharge and transition clinic.
  • Clinical Crisis Response: Responsible for coordinating and responding to all PHC facility acute crises or walk-in assessments.
  • Clinical Oversight: Oversees all PHC Behavioral Health staff and acts as clinical supervisor or clinical consult as needed. This includes consultation on complex cases, supervision of clinical services for all therapy providers, and ensuring the clinical team's adherence to evidence-based and patient centered care practices. Provides weekly or monthly supervision to licensed therapy team members.
  • Clinical Risk Management: Identifies and mitigates risks related to patient safety, legal compliance, and professional liability within inpatient behavioral health services. Develops policies and procedures to address risk factors and promote a safe environment for patients and staff. Serves as primary reviewer for all Safety Event & Reports, Just Culture Investigations, or use of seclusion/restraints.
  • Program Development: Designs, implements, and evaluates innovative inpatient behavioral health programs and services to meet the needs of patients. This may include creating new programs or expanding existing ones to address gaps in care or serve special populations.
  • Productivity Management: Designs and implements strategies that balance clinical productivity, revenue capture, quality patient care, provider support/workforce enjoyment, and regulatory compliance.
  • Compliance: Ensures Clinical and Administrative compliance across the inpatient behavioral health service line in alignment with local, state, federal, and regulatory standards. This includes chart audits for all clinical staff, chart maintenance, consent maintenance, and taking the lead on all state, commercial payor, and third-party audits.
  • Training: Oversees the management of clinical training programs in the inpatient service line. Along with Vail Health Behavioral Health Training Supervisor, functions as point of contact for schools and universities. Provides direct supervision to pre-doctoral interns and postdoctoral fellows. Ensures clinical and administrative compliance with student training programs, workforce pipeline strategies, and early career support.
  • Recruitment: Develops and implements strategies to recruit and retain the highest quality workforce across the behavioral health field. Fosters and maintains relationships with university and other state agencies to ensure recruitment of diverse staff. Provides infrastructure for new staff onboarding including: the development of the clinical on-boarding and training of all new Behavioral Health staff.
  • Quality: Conducts quality assurance activities including: conducting chart reviews, reviewing unanticipated outcomes reports, developing and monitoring practice protocols and procedures. Monitors treatment and programmatic measures, outcomes, and clinical quality. Works closely with the Quality Improvement team to determine and improve data capture for quality assurance maximizing outcomes and patient satisfaction.
  • Patient Advocacy: Serves as the primary Inpatient Behavioral Health point of contact for the Patient Advocacy team. Addresses all service line patient complaints either on the phone or in-person. Manages all grievances. Responsible for service recovery program for Behavioral Health alongside Patient Advocacy.
  • Administrative Support: Manages and assists in writing behavioral health related grants. Gathers data, generates content, and presents at relevant and applicable board meetings.
  • Community Engagement & Partnership Development: Engages with diverse community individuals and agencies to generate and maintain strong partnerships. Maintains and supports relationships with donors and key stakeholders. This may include hosting donor tours, attending community events, hosting workshops or presentations, and serving as a spokesperson for Inpatient BH services on local boards or advisory committees.
  • Clinical Training: Monitors ongoing training and clinical proficiency of behavioral health staff/trainees and ensures all state and federal training requirements are satisfied. Coordinates internal and external training to meet compliance and clinical needs. Facilitates professional development activities and promotes a culture of continuous learning.
  • Inpatient Clinical Operation Logistics: Responsible for collaborating with Admission and Intake and Inpatient Practice Management to oversee the allocation of both human and material resources to meet patient and community needs. Evaluates clinical and administrative workflows and processes to reduce bottleneck, streamline workflows, and enhance operational efficiency. Optimizes patient experience. Responsible for service line decisions about clinic operations during inclement weather, emergencies, and other circumstances.

What you will need:

Experience:
  • 5 years of applicable behavioral health experience required.
  • Minimum of 5 years progressive leadership experience in community behavioral health, community mental health, or related behavioral health experience required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a formal behavioral health setting; inpatient specific experience preferred.
  • Specific knowledge, training, and demonstrated expertise in Rural Mental Health Service Provision or Community Mental Health Psychology preferred.
  • Understanding of Colorado laws and regulations, as they relate to behavioral health providers preferred. Experience with developing strategies to ensure accurate and timely data collection and data reporting preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a nonprofit organization, foundation, or government agency in positions of progressively increasing responsibility preferred.
  • Expertise in American Psychological Association (APA) ethical codes and applicable statutes preferred.

License(s):
  • State of Colorado Licensed Psychologist required.

Education:
  • Doctoral degree in clinical psychology or counseling psychology required.
  • Completion of American Psychological Association (APA) Accredited Internship License in good standing within the state of Colorado preferred

Pay is based upon relevant education and experience per year.
