General Information:

JMU Libraries is accepting applications for a Director of Research & Education Services (RES), our department for liaison librarians and a campus leader in information literacy education. We are looking for a leader that is curious and excited to support a dynamic team.

The RES department includes 12 tenure-track or tenured librarians. Each librarian provides instruction, research consultations, and collection management for designated academic departments and majors. We are looking for a leader who can build upon our strong foundation and help us shape our future direction. The position will join the unit of Academic Engagement (AE). The Director will also collaborate with colleagues across the Libraries to develop integrative and inclusive services, as well as contribute to overall planning and management of the Libraries.

The RES Director is a full-time, twelve-month, tenure-track position with instructional faculty status. We anticipate hiring at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. The successful candidate will report to the Associate Dean for AE. The JMU Libraries faculty are governed by the policies and evaluation practices established in our Promotion & Tenure Guidelines and the JMU Faculty Handbook.

The Libraries particularly welcomes applicants who can enhance the inclusive excellence of our campus community and can demonstrate a commitment to building equitable and inclusive environments. We are committed to cultivating a welcoming place for everyone, encouraging dialogue, and celebrating diverse life experiences and perspectives.

JMU offers excellent comprehensive benefits. Visit our Prospective Employee site to learn more about what makes James Madison University a great place to work.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Specific responsibilities unique to this position include:
1. Coordinate liaison services with care for sustainable individual liaison librarian workloads and JMU faculty, staff, and/or student needs. As the leader for the department, the Director will not serve as primary liaison to an academic discipline but may provide backup as needed.
2. Supervise instructional faculty using techniques like coaching and mentorship.
3. Manage logistical operations of a department that works flexibly across multiple locations and modalities, both physical and virtual. Activities include coordinating connections and communications, documentation, and assessment for the department.
4. Coordinate the portfolio of projects across RES or when RES is a major stakeholder.
5. Partner with other Libraries departments on interrelated services and projects relevant to RES. Areas of frequent collaboration include collections, scholarly communications, access services, digital scholarship and special collections, and instructional design and educational technologies.

Responsibilities expected as a leader and supervisor in JMU Libraries include:
6. Represent the perspectives and interests of RES to the Libraries and campus partners.
7. Contribute to JMU Libraries' strategic activities, such as annual reporting and organization-wide strategic planning.
8. Collaborate with Libraries' ad hoc teams and leadership groups to shape operations, services, policies, and procedures.
9. As guided by the Associate Dean for Academic Engagement, translate and implement JMU policies and procedures into Libraries operations.

Qualifications:

Required:
• A graduate degree in library science or another relevant field.
• Experience in building relationships and delivering library services with academic departments and/or campus partners.
• Track record of progressively responsible experience with projects and/or services, such as taking on new challenges, developing services/programs related to liaison activities (as described above), project management, leadership roles, and/or fostering change.
• Demonstrated supervisory experience.
• Experience providing information literacy instruction grounded in information literacy standards and frameworks (e.g. ACRL's Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education).
• Demonstrated commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in an organizational context.

• Experience working in an academic library.

Additional Posting Information:

A "Statement of Inclusive Excellence" should describe the applicant's knowledge of and commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity, equity, inclusion and/or justice in an organizational content. The Statement of Inclusive Excellence should not focus on your personal values and experiences but should instead focus on your actions and experiences as they relate to diversity, equity, inclusion and/or justice.
