Job Description

Director of Pharmacy Operations and Informatics is focused on the areas of operations, medication safety, quality improvement, compliance, and pharmacy informatics. The position will report directly to the Sr. AVP of Pharmacy and Business operations.

Areas of focus for this position will include all NYC H+H inpatient and outpatient pharmacies along with procedural care areas where medications are utilized. The breadth of responsibilities will vary widely and require a thorough understanding of the NYC H+H pharmacy operations, informatics, automation and the medication use process.

All responsibilities are accomplished in collaboration with the corporate and pharmacy leadership under the direction of the Sr. AVP of Pharmacy and Business Operations.

General tasks and responsibilities will include:
  • Partners with the corporate office, site directors of pharmacy and other key stakeholders and subject matter experts to develop, maintain and assess all areas involving pharmacy informatics to ensure the health system is providing safe, optimal and cost-effective care for our patients.
  • Works with the corporate office, site directors of pharmacy and other key stakeholders to operationalize medication work-flows through-out the sites to help drive consistency and efficiency.
  • Looks for areas of opportunities to streamline operations and increase safety.
  • Works closely with the internal IT teams such as Epic and Beacon to design and implement the most appropriate pharmacy informatics builds based on best practices and clinical guidance.
  • Partners closely with the pharmacy automation and clinical teams to help develop, support and operationalize pharmacy automation initiatives. These initiatives include but are not limited to
    • Inventory Management Systems
    • Narcotic diversion software
    • USP 797/800 IV rooms
    • System and local Formulary alignment
    • IV Smart Pumps
    • Automated Medication Cabinets
  • Conducts post-implementation assessment of pharmacy informatics enhancements and new pharmacy programs and operations to ensure desired changes are achieved.
  • Works with IT, sites and vendors to help troubleshoot and resolve issues.
  • Helps develop and review key performance indicators (KPI) and quality measures related to operations and performance. Develops strategies based on those KPIs to improve performance.
  • Shares KPIs with system and site leadership on a routine basis
  • Prepares PowerPoint presentations and financial spreadsheets, and project implementation plans as needed.
  • Communicates and manages relationships across the system to promote engagement and offer support.
  • Develops information and in-service training programs for pharmacy, nursing and medical staff with respect to pharmacy informatics and operations.
  • Develops curriculum relating to use of pharmacy technology, and reporting.
  • Participates in the preparation and review of systemwide policies and procedures as related to pharmacy operations and pharmacy informatics.
  • Participates in meetings related to pharmacy operations and informatics.
  • Maintains communication with professional and governmental organizations.
  • Maintains relationship with pharmacy automation and technology providers.
  • Communicates, clearly and effectively, with staff and leadership budgets and financial goals.
  • Contributes to the success of NYC H+H by providing leadership, direction and coordination of operations and finances for all areas of responsibility.
  • Manages the complex interdepartmental and interdisciplinary relationships to help assure collaboration and effective/efficient operations within the institution.
  • Creates an environment that encourages diverse opinions, recognizes differences and incorporates into processes and operations.
  • Assess all departmental leadership and staff development needs. Helps identify goals and provides resources.
  • Helps identify lack of competency in performance of staff members and works toward development of correction plans which include goals and interventions.
  • Participates in developing succession plans for select pharmacy positions
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge on pharmacy informatics and relevant automation and technology.
  • Performs related duties, as required.


Minimum Qualifications
1. Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in Business Administration, Computer Science, Management or other related discipline from an accredited college or university; and six (6) years of satisfactory, full-time paid responsible experience in information processing, program management, systems development or related activity in a large governmental agency, hospital or health care facility, or hospital-related business firm, three (3) years of which must have been in a managerial capacity; or
2. Master's degree from an accredited college or university in disciplines, as listed in "1" above, and five (5) years of experience, as described in #2 above, one (1) year of which must have been in a managerial capacity; or
3. A satisfactory equivalent combination of education and experience.

Department Preferences

  • Current license and registration in good standing to practice Pharmacy in New York State, required.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Pharmacy OR Pharm.D required.
  • MBA, MHA, or MPH
  • Seven (7) years of satisfactory, full-time experience as a Licensed Practicing Pharmacist, of which at least four (4) years shall have been in an administrative, managerial and supervisory capacity in a Pharmacy in a hospital, health or medical care facility.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, interpersonal and presentation skills, required.
  • Ability to formulate, develop and implement pharmacy service programs and to direct and supervise pharmacy service personnel and staff activities.
  • Ability to work effectively with administrative staff, medical and nursing personnel, and to coordinate Pharmacy programs and activities throughout the facility.
  • Knowledgeable in Pharmacy Operations and Informatics
