General Information:

The Department of Health Professions in the College of Health and Behavioral Studies at James Madison University invites applications for a Doctoral Graduate Assistant for the Master of Science Athletic Training (MSAT) program to begin August 2025. The MSAT program, accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE), is one of five programs within the Department of Health Professions. The doctoral degree offered is a PhD in Strategic Leadership. Appointment is annually renewable for 4 years.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Assist in teaching courses in the MSAT program and associated undergraduate courses for pre-athletic training students
• Assist in program administration, including but not limited to maintaining CAATE accreditation, program assessment, curriculum and course development, clinical education placements, clinical education site visits, coordinating pre-professional student observation and internship experiences
• Assist in the development and implementation of annual preceptor education
• Coordinate laboratory activities across the curriculum, including inventory control
• Coordinate standardized patients and simulations across the curriculum
• Assist in supervising master's student research
• Complete collaborative and independent research, including grant proposal submission, data collection and analysis, manuscript preparation
• Participate in service at the state, regional, and/or national level
• Opportunities exist for providing medical care for the JMU ROTC, University Health Center, and JMU Sports Medicine
• Mentor and advise MSAT students and student professional organization
• Opportunity to participate as a second faculty member in MSAT study abroad experience

Qualifications:

1. Earned master's degree in athletic training, sports medicine, or related area is required
2. 2+ years experience as a certified athletic trainer (can include graduate assistant role) preferred
3. Possess current ATC credential, NPI number, and VA state license or eligible
4. Strong oral and written communication skills
5. Experience in completing a master's thesis or research project is preferred

Students may apply to a graduate assistantship prior to being accepted into a graduate program. However, to be eligible to receive an assistantship upon entry into a graduate program, the following criteria must be met:

The student must be conditionally or unconditionally accepted into a graduate program. Students who are provisionally accepted will not be eligible until they achieve conditional or unconditional acceptance into their program.

The students must have an official transcript on file indicating completion of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution or agency

After receiving an assistantship, the student must maintain at least a 3.0 graduate GPA in order to retain or reapply for the assistantship.

These are minimum criteria. Graduate program coordinators have the right to impose additional criteria if they see fit.
