The Alice Area Office is looking for an enthusiastic individual to aid in the application of transportation design standards and practices (Transportation Engineering Specialist) in the creation of plans, specifications, and estimates for contractor bidding, and the execution of TxDOT access management requirements for adherence to standards in the office's area of responsibility. Position Description

Performs advanced and specialized drafting, calculations and design work; performs field work; uses automated systems; learns specialized techniques. Design activity is overseen by a licensed professional engineer or registered architect who has final approval authority for projects. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

Transportation Engineering Specialist I:

  • Assists in writing general notes, specifications and provisions
  • Attends specialized design schools.
  • Learns specialized design and project development techniques.
  • Performs advanced and specialized design work.
  • Performs advanced and specialized drafting and calculations in support of design activities; develops graphic presentations that include distinctive design features.
  • Prepares quantity summaries, hydraulic and utility studies and right-of-way maps.
  • Prepares roadway design traffic control, lighting, signal, and building plans.
  • Uses additional automated design tools or specialized design procedures in areas including bridge/culvert detailing, traffic management, geometric design signal lighting design, retaining walls and building design.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.


Transportation Engineering Specialist II:

in addition to the above

  • Reviews entire sets of plans for format, drafting and calculation errors and correlation of plans and specifications.
  • Writes general notes, specifications and provisions,
  • Performs advanced and specialized drafting and calculations in support of design activities, develops graphic presentations that include distinctive design features.


Transportation Engineering Specialist III:

in addition to the above

  • Receives project assignments, determines work requirements to complete project plans and coordinates scheduling to accommodate projects already underway.
  • Prepares budget estimates.
  • Reviews work done by others for drafting and calculation errors.


Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience:

Transportation Engineering Specialist I: 6* years drafting, design, plan preparation.

Transportation Engineering Specialist II: 7* years drafting, design, plan preparation.

Transportation Engineering Specialist II: 8* years drafting, design, plan preparation.

*Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Mandatory Safety Impact Certificate

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Transportation Engineering Specialist I, II & III:

  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
  • Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs
  • Fingering-picking pinching, typing working primarily with fingers rather than whole hand
  • Grasping-applying pressure to an object with fingers and palm
  • Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
  • Hearing-perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication
  • Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
  • Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
  • Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment
  • Visual Acuity-determine work quality/make general observations of facilities/structures
