Engineering Technician

Houston, Texas

Employer: Insight Global
Industry: Business Analysis
Salary: Competitive
Job type: Part-Time

A utilities client in the Houston area is looking for an Engineering Tech/Specialist to join their team. Proficient in processing customer applications for Residential Distributed Generation (DG) utilizing a custom-built customer interface portal. Understand, read, and approve/reject electric one-lines, metering and relaying drawings, equipment specifications submitted as part of the DG applications. Solid project management skills to coordinate the scope, schedule of a DG project within several internal stakeholder teams. The successful candidate will collaborate with external residential and commercial DG installers, developers, engineering firms to develop processes and bring efficiencies in application processing. They will also interact with internal stake holders like Distribution Planning & Engineering, Service Consultants, Substation Engineering & Operations, Major Underground Engineering & Operations, Distribution Key Accounts to evaluate the scope of DG requests, create new or modify existing DG projects within the portal. The candidate will also be responsible for completion of assigned milestones within defined timelines and served as Subject Matter Expert on various internal and external industry technical working groups/committees. Works under the close supervision and direction of a licensed professional engineer or engineering manager. This team looks at a large amount of data, almost 60,000 lines of data that they must mine through for metrics (they have a data analyst that does it, but occasionally this individual will need to help).

Residential customers will call into the customer care number and if they mention solar or distribution it is routed to this team. They are the hotline for all customer calls and get 100+ emails daily that they must go through and reply to customers on status updates, and process applications. They have rigorous compliance metrics from the time the customer applies in terms of time to review the design, inspection and complete it all in 30 days. This team works out of their portal daily. The portal has a filtered to-do list for all the engineering. They typically get 150-180 applications in a single day. One person, after training and understanding all the systems, can process 30 applications in one day. The internal team takes turns processing the applications. The interns and an offshore team also help process applications as well. Lately, they have seen increased installations, so the 30 days it takes to complete the applications is becoming unachievable.
