Under the direction of the Supervising Chemist, the incumbent performs professional scientific work; gathers data on environmental issues; performs environmental analysis, research and studies; writes preliminary reports; prepares routine correspondence and provides data for regulatory and compliance documents.

Collects, analyzes, reviews and evaluates scientific and technical data collected on environmental issues to support reports generated for stakeholders that meet established scientific standards. Performs professional chemical analyses using pre-tested standardized analytical methods or standard operating procedures used in the analysis of untreated raw surface waters, ground waters, agricultural drainage waters, water storage impoundments and industrial wastewaters.

This position requires the incumbent to work cooperatively with others, maintain regular, consistent, predictable attendance, communicate effectively and exercise good judgment. Incumbent must follow DWR and laboratory safety policies.

Special Requirements

Ability to move samples or objects weighing up to 25 pounds.

Must have a valid California driver's license in order to attend meetings away from laboratory. May require driving a vehicle on public roadways or in the field on uneven terrain.

Desirable Qualifications In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

•Knowledge of environmental chemical laboratory techniques, technologies, and environmental laboratory Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC)

•Environmental chemical laboratory experience and technical competence of operating sophisticated testing equipment, performing regulatory water quality analytical tests, evaluating complex data

•Possession of a strong scientific background with troubleshooting and instrument maintenance skills

•Experience evaluating, analyzing and/or problem-solving complex situations

•Experience with compliance to CA Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program regulations and the 2016 The NELAC Institute (TNI) Standard

•Experience drafting, reviewing, and revising test methods and reports

•Computer experience using a database to document and/or sort information and to prepare reports; and demonstrated proficiency with various computer programs, i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and other software

•Ability to work cooperatively with others; communicate effectively both orally and in writing

•A willingness to do routine work in a dynamic team environment, an interest in scientific work and aptitude for the work
