Under the direct supervision of the Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory), the Environmental Scientist performs a broad range of work related to protecting human health and the environment in California. Incumbents will oversee/implement enforcement of various environmental and environmental health-related laws and regulations; develop regulatory measures and enforce environmental standards; develop guidance regarding pesticide-related programs; develop and assess alternatives for mitigation of hazards to the public and the environment; conduct/participate in human and environmental health investigations; meet and confer with individuals/groups to obtain compliance with laws and regulations, concerning environmental requirements of California and Federal governments; conduct trainings for stakeholders; evaluate and oversee local pesticide enforcement agencies; analyze/implement enforcement of legislation, regulations, policies, etc.; participate in hearings and field investigations as a staff expert for pesticide-related matters; and prepare presentations, reports, and correspondence on the aforementioned tasks.

Working Conditions
  • Working on a single floor building, under artificial lighting; and sit for moderate periods of time.
  • The collection of samples as indicated for this position requires the ability to lift and carry a minimum of 40 pounds, bend, squat, and climb over boxes, containers,or pallets.
  • There is regular field work performed, requiring the ability to maneuver over uneven ground and work in outdoor conditions.
  • Occasional statewide travel is required; travel within the region (Kern county to Santa Clara county) is monthly.
  • Travel by automobile or air may be required to different areas of the State which may include overnight stays several days each month.
  • Occasional irregular work schedules may be required.
NOTE: This position may be eligible for hybrid telework under Government Code 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California, subject to the candidate meeting telework eligibility criteria set forth in the CalEPA telework policy and/or future program need. Employees not residing in California are not eligible for telework.
