Summary

Performs mechanical repairs requiring adjustments to a variety of Heavy and Light equipment, and performs preventive maintenance. Position supports vehicles and equipment at city Landfills.

Essential Functions
  • Perform all the duties of an equipment technician helper
  • Repair autos, trucks, heavy and specialized equipment requiring minor and major adjustments to ensure proper levels of performance
  • Perform daily fluid checks, and lubrication of equipment, fuel and fuel additives as needed.
  • Perform minor repairs, such as replacement of hydraulic hoses
  • Repair or replace electrical components
  • Perform battery maintenance with the knowledge of 12v and 24v systems
  • Use of welding equipment to make repairs or fabricate metal parts
  • Perform related duties as directed.
Qualifications

Completion of a high school diploma or the equivalent with an additional two years of experience in automotive mechanics; or any combination of relevant education and experience which provides the following:

Physical Exam Required

Valid CDL class B with Haz-mat endorsement or ability to obtain within 3 months

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:
  • Methods, techniques, and tools used in automotive repair.
Ability to:
  • Perform in-depth diagnostics on vehicles.
  • Operate a variety of automotive diagnostic equipment.
  • Meet the certification and competency standards established for the position.
  • Communicate effectively with others.
  • Use troubleshooting skills.
Physical Requirements:
  • Frequently lift and carry up to 25 pounds
  • Occasionally lift and carry up to 50 pounds
  • Frequently walk and stand during the shift
  • Frequently climb ladders, stairs and inclined surfaces
  • Frequently bend and kneel during the shift
  • Push objects away from oneself
  • Continuously flex upper trunk forward at the waist and partially at the knees
  • Occasionally move body in a crawling motion in order to repair vehicles
  • Continuously rotate upper trunk to the left or right while sitting or standing
  • Frequently reach above, at or below shoulder height
  • Coordinate eye, hand and foot movement in order to operate a vehicle
