Position Summary:

The School of Medicine is seeking experienced financial management professionals who are looking for an opportunity to lead a team in supporting financial and administrative operations in our Basic Health Science departments. Successful candidates will have a strong background in financial management, be proactive, and present a willingness to learn and grow in the role. This position will focus on streamlining and updating fiscal processes, financial reporting, and overall financial management practices in assigned basic health science departments, while also overseeing the day-to-day of department fiscal operations in assigned unit(s). This position will offer opportunities for career growth in finance and operations management and will serve as a key contributor in initiatives aimed at modernizing and streamlining business operations practices across all Basic Health Sciences departments to both increase efficiencies and help foster collaboration across Basic Health Science units.

Core Responsibilities:
  • Manage daily fiscal operations, monthly reconciliation, purchasing, corpcard, and travel
  • Serve as supervisor to fiscal staff members who manage the daily operational tasks
  • Assist in budget development and implementation including the assessment of requested funding, presentation of various budget scenarios for a school/business unit
  • Development of unit specific financial planning tools/business models for reporting to leadership on various operational and academic initiatives
  • Analyze financial data and develops moderately complex reports for forecasting and results analysis
  • Serve as primary approver in Real Source and for expense transfers and function as effort coordinator for sponsored research
  • Ensure that all purchasing and budget transactions adhere to VCU fiscal policy with maintenance of a moderate level of technical knowledge regarding university systems and competence with university procedures, policies, and guidelines
  • Assist with annual fiscal projects from the school, health sciences and university level
  • Execute and manage budget transactions to ensure salary and benefit charges are fully funded in the appropriate department and the correct documentation/tracking is maintained
  • Execute comprehensive payroll reconciliations using Excel in order to identify errors
  • Analyze payroll reports to identify trends or anomalies and report findings to Department Administrator
Minimum Hiring Standards:
  • Accounting experience, including demonstrated experience analyzing labor distributions reports, managing end of month financial reports and budget reconciliations and suggesting potential solutions to the issues being analyzed
  • Demonstrated ability to independently problem solve using sound judgment and professional discretion and maintain confidentiality related to sensitive data and discussions
  • Experience in budget preparation, forecasting and model building; experience overseeing inventory control required; management of surplus property
  • Ability to research, compile, analyze, and evaluate large datasets on which to base forecasts and projections
  • Ability to effectively respond to and communicate with customers including excellent written and oral communications skills with proven ability to effectively communicate with all levels of management, government and financial officials, and public constituents
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint), with advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel
  • Ability to work independently and to identify, define, analyze, and formulate alternative solutions to complex administrative and budget implementation issues
  • Must have a demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion in past experiences or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Preferred Master's degree, required Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or public administration and/or 5 to 7 years of experience in apposition with fiscal responsibilities, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Prior financial management experience at an academic institution strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge and ability to learn and utilize university specific financial management systems
